Braz-Tesol Rio Chapter

Braz-Tesol Rio Chapter www.braztesol.org.br Everyone was thrilled at this perspective for we all knew the importance of BRAZ-TESOL work.

The chapter was founded in 2003 when Vera Bradford, BRAZ-TESOL President at the time, invited a group of ELT professionals from several well-known institutions in the city to get engaged in a new task: to promote events aiming at bringing the ELT community in Rio opportunities for professional development. The pioneers in that endeavor were Alda Coimbra (Colégio Pedro II), Alice Estacca (CCAA), Be

bel Cunha (Colégio Don Quixote) , Bill McDavid (CCAA), Janaína Cardoso (SENAC) , Inés Miller (PUC), Sheila Lima (Curso Oxford), Patricia Blower (Cultura Inglesa), and Maria do Socorro Guimarães (Ibeu).

ELT Goes Green: Language for Change

As global challenges such as climate change and environmental sustainability become increasingly urgent, educators play a crucial role in shaping how learners understand and respond to these issues. ELT Goes Green: Language for Change, organized by the BRAZ-TESOL Rio Chapter, invites English language educators to explore how ELT can contribute to greater environmental awareness and meaningful action.

This event brings together educators who are integrating sustainability into their teaching practices through innovative projects, critical discussions, and real-world connections. The sessions will present practical ideas and inspiring examples of how environmental themes can enrich language learning while fostering critical thinking, collaboration, and global citizenship.

This conversation goes beyond one specific teaching context. Whether you work in bilingual schools, language institutes, universities, or with adult learners, this event is for you. Sustainability is a global issue, and language classrooms at all levels can play a powerful role in driving change.

We’re excited to launch a brand-new initiative from our chapter: the ELT Expert Series.

This series is designed exclusively for Rio Chapter members, bringing monthly sessions with renowned ELT professionals who will share practical tips, teaching strategies, and insights you can apply directly in your classroom.

We’re proud to kick things off on April 11th from 9am to 10am with Bruno Albuquerque.

Bruno is a teacher educator, materials writer, and Co-Founder of ELT in Brazil. Currently the Communications Director and Magazine Editor for BRAZ-TESOL, he specializes in Dogme ELT and created the ETRER framework. He holds a DELTA and a BA in English/Portuguese and is currently pursuing an MA in ELT at NILE/University of Chichester.

In this session, Bruno will explore how to teach a Dogme lesson, organize a course without a coursebook, and work with emergent language. He will also introduce the ETRER framework as a practical roadmap for the unplugged classroom, helping bring learning back to what really matters: the people in the room.
