Out on Homelands with the extraordinary team at Ingkerreke Outstations Resource Services Aboriginal Corporation - Creating homes on country, and improving services across 55 Homelands spread across hundreds of miles of the regions around Alice Springs. We spent an amazing week there learning more about their team and the work they do. Inspiring.

The Northern Territory is in a long-term housing and homelessness crisis. Ambition and investment to date have been inadequate to meet the basic accommodation needs of all Territorians. In Greater Darwin, the most visible evidence of a need to provide adequate support is the presence of people who are sleeping rough.

Target 9B – Close the Gap

According to the Productivity Commission Closing the Gap: Dashboard, Target 9B cannot be reported against.

Submission 1 of the Closing the Gap Review 2026 by Aboriginal Housing Northern Territory (AHNT), presents a methodology for measuring Target 9B through the assessment of 10 Consumer-Centred Apex Indicators.

Consumer-Centred Apex Indicators assess the extent to which regulatory reporting requirements, guaranteed service levels, consumer rights, and hardship protections enshrined in key codes, licences and customer contracts applying in major urban NT also apply to essential services delivery in NT Aboriginal communities.

Closing the Gap Target 9B states that by 2031, all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander households: (1) within discrete Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander communities receive essential services that meet or exceed the relevant jurisdictional standard; and (2) in or near to a town receive essential services that meet or exceed the same standard as applies generally within the town (this includes Town Camps).

Essential services include power, water, wastewater, and solid waste collection.

Aboriginal Housing Northern Territory (AHNT), the North Australian Aboriginal Justice Agency (NAAJA) and the North Australian Aboriginal Family Legal Service (NAAFLS) are deeply disappointed by today's announcement from the Northern Territory Government that residents of YiSSA Short-Stay Accommodation will be relocated to Batchelor following the closure of YiSSA.

Followed our outgoing CEO, Leeanne Caton, who was speaking at the 'Justice not Jails' event yesterday. Some revelations, not just related to the proposed private prison, were quite shocking and although the crowd there seemed dedicated to the cause, they need more support on the ground and at would have been great to see more people there. The issues are not only of interest to the Aboriginal community, everybody should be on-board.

The CLP Goverment has recently annouced plans to build a $1.2 billion privately owned prison and remand centre. This comes at a time when the NT’s child protection system is in crisis, our public hospitals are at full capacity, our public education
systems are under strain, and housing is non-existent.

There will be guest speakers and a Q&A session. Join us and have your say.

This will be peaceful and
respectful gathering.

Children are welcome. There will be a play area and activities. The park is accessible for wheelchairs and mobility scooters. There are public toilets.
