Health & housing | We’re proud to be leading one of the projects funded under the National Health and Medical Research Council - NHMRC and Medical Research Council’s Targeted Call for Research to better understand the connection between homelessness and health.

Partnering locally with Aboriginal Housing NT (AHNT) and Larrakia Nation Aboriginal Corporation alongside national and international collaborators, this work will investigate the health impacts of housing instability, rough sleeping and overcrowding in the Northern Territory (NT).

Commencing early next year, this co-designed work will focus on Aboriginal leadership and lived experience to support health and housing policy and service delivery changes to be culturally appropriate and benefit Aboriginal people.

The first official meeting of the Homelands Committee took place at the incredible NLC building in Berrimah. A hive of activity, filled with the positivity and momentum a new home can bring and a perfect spot for Leeanne Caton to touch base with representatives of Territory homeland and NLC representatives, offering support and knowledge to help them navigate the issues they face daily.

We spent a day last week with Avinash Yadav from Warnbi Aboriginal Corporation visiting homelands in Kakadu. We experienced first hand the incredible system he has designed and implemented to successfully monitor and control power and water issues and consumption remotely. The system ensures a reliable and continuous supply. With the system controlled remotely, it also allows Warnbi Aboriginal Corporation to regulate the huge expense of sending technicians to site to monitor repair and maintenance to these systems. This has huge potential to assist remote communities across Australia.

Our aim, with this regular review, is to highlight some of the issues and comment from local NT Aboriginal organisations and media from across Australia (and internationally) that paint a picture of what is driving the Aboriginal community-controlled housing, homelands and homelessness sectors and how AHNT is responding to the challenge as a strong,

unified voice to government. We hope it generates discussion, engagement and inspiration.

YiSSA transition begins as new referrals cease, with families needing certainty

Yilli Housing Aboriginal Corporation, Mission Australia, Aboriginal Housing NT and NT Shelter are warning that the impacts of the proposed closure of YiSSA are already being felt, with residents, families and frontline workers experiencing growing uncertainty as the closure process begins.
