Another fantastic update from the Ryerson Index!

Since our last update on 25 April, our dedicated volunteers have added an incredible 37,483 records to the Index.

It's been a little quiet from us, we do apologise, sometimes life gets in the way! Rest assured we're always working in the background ;)

Every record represents another piece of family history preserved and made accessible for researchers, genealogists and families around Australia and beyond.

To our volunteers – thank you for your ongoing commitment, attention to detail and countless hours of work. Your efforts continue to make the Ryerson Index an invaluable resource for the family history community.

If your Irish surname appears in the 1659 Census, your family's name has been documented in Ireland for over 360 years. 🍀

The 1659 Petty Census is one of the oldest surviving population records in Irish history. Commissioned by Sir William Petty after the Cromwellian wars, it recorded the principal Irish surnames in every barony across the country, giving us a rare window into which families were living where, and in what numbers, before the great waves of emigration even began.

For genealogy researchers, this record is pure gold. If your surname is O'Brien, McCarthy, O'Neill, or dozens of others, you may be able to trace your family's presence in a specific Irish county all the way back to the 1650s. That's not just history. That's your history. 📜

Drop your Irish surname in the comments below and let's see if your family name appears in the 1659 Census! 👇☘️

The road your ancestor took in the early 18th century to move from point A to point B did not look like this one. If your ancestor made a major move, have you looked into what routes were likely taken, what they would have packed with them, how long the trip probably took, etc.?

Likely a little dog was not pulling their wagon along the way.
