After all the rain lately, the weather finally cleared and we were treated to a beautiful sunny morning for my Queen’s Guide Japanese-themed wide game.
Eighteen Guides aged 7–17 from across the Central Coast were divided into three patrols Sakura, Himawari and Momiji. They followed ‘a day in the life’ of Aiko, a Japanese Girl Scout, completing challenges and learning about Guiding in Japan and Japanese culture.
The activities included calligraphy, Japanese language, sushi making, traditional games, gadgets, festival masks and uniforms. At each station, the Guides read a story card explaining how that activity fitted into Aiko’s day. Once they completed the activity, they earned a jigsaw puzzle piece, which they put together at the end to reveal the WAGGGS flag on one side and the Japanese Girl Scout Promise on the other, tying the whole wide game together.
There was a lot of planning, preparation and behind-the-scenes work involved in organising the wide game, but seeing everything come together on the day made it all worthwhile. It was rewarding to watch the Guides taking part in the activities, learning about a different culture and having fun along the way. The feedback from the Guides was fantastic, with many saying they wished they had even more time at each activity.
I am incredibly grateful to everyone who participated and helped make the morning such a success. Thank you to Iris, Krubi and Bilby for helping supervise throughout the wide game, and thank you to the Guides for coming along and giving everything a go. A big thank you also goes to Tumbi Guides for allowing us to use their hall
