Fridays usually mean doing an end-of-week clean for both our indoor and outdoor setups 🛁🧹

You can see how much mess has accumulated on top of the flight cage here, in just a single week (don’t believe the petshops who try to sell small birds as “low maintenance pets”).

While most of our birds live out in the aviaries, we have about 25 resident birds who remain indoors due to disability, illness, or old age.

Indigo the budgie, pictured here, is one of our disabled indoor residents. And despite there being few other culprits, she was most unhappy about being accused of making all of this mess 😂

Today, the 13th June, is Sanctuary Caregiver Day. A day to recognise and appreciate the people who dedicate so much of their time to rescuing animals in need and providing much needed sanctuary.

The Love All Budgies Day website has a page “Help A Budgie” that lists bird rescues and sanctuaries. Most are on social media. Do take some time to check them out and donate if you can.

Getting pictures of the Sparrows isn't easy these days - they're quite skittish and don't like having phones pointed at them. This is the best I was able to get - a brief moment of contemplation of when they might next eat seed on a cold, sunny afternoon.

If only we could all spend our days sitting on branches in the dappled afternoon sun.

It's tiring work chewing leaves and pooping everywhere! And that's not even mentioning the rest of their hard work:
