Secretary's Report (August 2026) by Derek Hinde:

It has been a number of months since my last Secretarys Report. A lot of events have taken place within the Club, since I was delayed due to some ongoing medical problems with myself.

Membership has been on the increase since the June "Kings Birthday" Long Weekend MOTORFEST 26 in Tuncurry. An amazing number of vehicles turned up as well many visitors and attendees. Overall the weekend was one of the best the Great Lakes Historic Automobile Club Motorfests have provided. Also our new Club brochure has been distributed throughout Forster and Tuncurry.
Monthly meetings have been very well attended and included many
visitors, with at least 5 joining as members. Since the Club moved to The Sporties Club in Tuncurry in March this year, the recent August Meeting being our 7th gathering, attendance numbers have been well into the high 30's and the 40's.

We have welcomed Glenn & Kerry Thomson, Jim & Kay Morgan, Matt Palme & Rachel Bissell and we have 3 new memberships still to process. A big welcome to you all and hope you enjoy all of our social activities.

The Events Committee should be congratulated for the Coffee & Chat mornings and Lunch runs to places like Nabiac, Gloucester, Taree, Barrington, and Tea Gardens cafes. And also the recent Christmas in July function. All very well supported.

We aslo thank Des & Belinda Moy for their exceptional contribution of being the Club Treasurers. Especially monthly balancing our Clubs finances. With Income and Expenses Report given at each Monthly Meeting. And it's not an easy occupation having to deal constantly with the Australian Government Taxation Laws where the Club is now obliged to pay Income Tax.

Another pleasant Coffee & Chat outing to Bronte Belo at Diamond Beach, with 23 in attendance. Coffee, cakes, bacon and eggs were enjoyed by all, as well as the usual banter to go with it.

President Hilton checks out "1916", an Australian made masterpiece! Built by Mark Walker in 2013 - the 2560 cc Supercharged 2 Stroke V16!

Crank put together with 32 joints and 9 mainbearings. Crankcase made from 90 degree 10mm angle. Crankpins were made longer to accomodate 2 conrods. Remachining the Flywheels, Conrods, Barrels, Heads, Pistons from 16 x 160 Victa lawnmowers. The Victa flywheels were bored out to fit 25mm mainshafts and dowelled each shaft into the flywheel. Blocks machined and split and screwed into crankcase to support mainbearings. Rover Gear Box Bevel Gears, shaft driven into the Suzuki Clutch which is released by a thrust bearing with handle. Fuel tank is an Australian made fire extinguisher. Triumph Wheels. Early 1920’s Seat. Early BSA Girder Forks. Morris 1600 Inch 1/2 SU Carburetor. Air filter on Carby is a 1920’s shower rose. Headlamp is a Brass drain from a shower block. Australian Made Brass Drain pipe fittings from the early 1950’s for the Airflow to crankcase. Australian Made CEMA Oxy gauge for the motor pressure on the left grip. Douglas Throttle control. “Quadrature” tachometer type 102-B.S. - A Symchrotac Instrument Made in Australia. Grips are copper pipe with aluminium caps and brass sleeves to hold. Copper Pipe Centipede for high tension leads. Brass Wing nuts on front wheel from the Dorrigo antiques shop. Spur Gears running the Supercharger 2:1 which is from a Japanese Vehicle. Holden V8 Distributors geared 1:1. Ignition Coils are old parts from the MW Special - top fuel drag bike.

The V16 is called 1916 as a nod to the Era.
Inspired by the European builders of V16’s in the pre-war era.

MidCoast Council awards bi-annually grants to promote cultural and community events both small and large. Over the past few years we have been successful, despite there always being a high number of high quality submissions, to receive Council's support for Motorfest. This year Council supported our event with a $1800 grant. Thank you Mid Coast Council.

The Ford Model T - the ultimate offroader!

This photograph shows a Ford Model T roadster converted into an experimental tracked military vehicle, most likely using the Chase Track System, photographed in Washington, D.C. around 1921. Although often described as a “tank,” it was not a true armoured fighting vehicle. It was better understood as a tracked light tractor or reconnaissance experiment: a standard Model T body mounted on a multi-wheel endless-track undercarriage to improve movement through mud, snow, sand, and rough ground. The Model T was an ideal test platform because it was cheap, light, simple, widely available, and mechanically rugged.

The scene appears to be a military demonstration near Rock Creek, with the bridge in the background probably being the Taft Bridge rather than Key Bridge, despite the later Library of Congress caption. The U.S. Army was experimenting heavily with cross-country vehicles after World War I, trying to adapt cars, tractors, armoured cars, and tanks for future use. The Chase Track idea was clever, but it added weight, complexity, drag, and maintenance problems to a small low-powered car, so it was never adopted as a standard U.S. military vehicle. Today the image survives as a fascinating glimpse of a dead-end experiment: a Model T halfway between a car, tractor, snowmobile, and tank.
