Only one week to go until our next community seminar. Recent events in The Gap have shown us how important good connections between the people living here are. For example in the 2022 flooding event, people kept each other informed about the water level in the dam, and people helped those at risk of flooding. Or on the many occasions, when people's pets escape, there will be photos on The Gap Grapevine, or kind people take the lost pets in until the owner is found. Or when wildlife needs care, such as when the curlews decide to nest on the footpath near Wittonga park. Or earlier this year the community informed each other about a proposed 10 story development on cherished golf course green space and people came together to write high quality submissions highlighting key flaws in that proposal, such as a lack of alignment with The Gap neighbourhood plan. These and many other examples come to mind when we think about the contribution citizens make to the community. How can we become even more active and well connected? Come along Tuesday the 15th September to join Damien to discuss the topic of citizenship. Also hear about the response by the developer to the community concerns with regards to the Ashgrove Gold Course 10 storey proposal.

Many people in The Gap are very fond of and proud of this suburb's many beautiful green spaces and gardens. Many residents have a special connection with nature and look after the local wildlife, providing water, planting natives, recording sightings on iNaturalist and many other acts of kindness. Many residents are therefore also concerned when some of the green space is under threat as is currently the case with a proposed development on the Ashgrove Golf Course which is actually entirely in The Gap. We and other community groups and members have placed comments with regards to the proposal's size and magnitude, and now there was a response form the developer. Come and hear our members summarise that response and whether it adequately addressed our concerns, next week Tuesday evening 15th September at The Gap State High School library, 7pm.

The role of health care professionals is to keep us healthy and well, and provide advice on prevention, treatment and supportive care. So when the doctors and nurses are calling for urgent action then you know that you need to take it serious. Doctors for the Environment Australia are now calling for rapid action on climate change, as more and more serious event are documenting that the current situation is unsustainable. You can join their mailing group of events to learn more about how impacts physical and mental health, and why climate change is a health emergency and what you can do to protect your family and friends.

A few years ago Professor Hugh Possingham was our guest presenter - and encouraged us to use data to make good decisions about which project to focus on by considering a number of parameters such as the likely impact, success and input. You can watch him present details on this approach which brings methods from statistics, mathematics and economics together, and applies it to wicked problems such as which areas to protect for bets impact for biodiversity. Its a highly valuable presentation.

Have you heard about the movement? It aims to make streets safe and accessible for all, including pedestrians, cyclists, children, people using public transport, older people and more. There is also a focus on health with safe, shaded and comfortable streets a key requirement for people feeling comfortable walking - a key ingredient for healthy living. Better Streets believe that the focus on cars is outdated and no longer viable, and that good quality of life depends on a change to how public space is fairly distributed between all road users. Are there streets in The Gap that you are particularly concerned about or alternatively that you think are exemplars for a fabulous street? Let us know your view in the chat.

Better Streets Brisbane Better Streets Brisbane aims to foster a safer, more accessible, and environmentally friendly street network in Brisbane that priorities pedestrians, cyclists, and public transport users. “We envision a Brisbane where streets are not just thoroughfares for cars but dynamic ...

Community is everything, and citizens are the driving force behind thriving communities. Our next seminar will celebrate the contribution that each and every person brings to the community and show some new tools that will help us to better understand community knowledge and insights. Damien has been knee deep in some new and exciting software tools that he wants to share with you and use to allow you to have your say on topics of importance. See you at the seminar on the 15th September, The Gap State High School library.

As usual we ventured out this Saturday morning for Street Tree Care. The morning was crips and cold, but we soon were glad about the cooler weather when working hard to remove very dense grass around the trees. About 10 or 12 trees were services in this session. One had a creative wooden boundary around it already protecting it from wipper snippers. There were also a couple of trees which had died and we used the Snap Send Solve app to notify council about these ones that need replacement. Thanks to all the volunteers who joined this morning. Next session will be Saturday the 12th September.
