To guide our work in genuine community engagement we have coined the term Connections Before Content.

Before you launch that survey, start that initiative, or host that consultation, remember: The best engagement strategy isn't digital—it's human. 💟
To build true trust, you need to move from transactional to relational.

🚀 Here are 3 Rules to get you started

1️⃣ Relationships First: Meet people where they are. Attend local events and build rapport before you need something.
The Mindset: Shift from "I am the expert with a solution" to "I am a guest in their space."

2️⃣ Listen Before Speaking: Understand community needs deeply rather than assuming you know them.
The Mindset: Practice "Radical Curiosity." Assume you know only 10% of the story.

3️⃣ Trust Before Task: If the trust isn't there, the task won't get done.
The Mindset: Trust isn't a checkbox; it’s a living currency. Trust is earned through consistent follow-through, active listening, and honoring small commitments over time.

If you skip connections, your content is just noise.

Are we managing communities, or developing them?

⛓️‍💥 Community Management often focuses on deficits, repairing issues, and top-down control. It treats residents as passive recipients.

🌻 Community Development acts as a catalyst, identifying local assets and amplifying the 'positive core'—what is already working well.

True, endogenous community development is a shift from:
➡️ "What's wrong? How do we fix it?" (Deficit)
➡️ "What's strong? How do we amplify it?" (Appreciative)

If we are not listening, co-creating, and passing the torch of leadership to local citizens, we are merely managing.

Let’s stop focusing on what’s broken and start investing in what's possible.
