Sumaya first heard about our Centre from a friend seven years ago. At the time, she decided to give our programs a go, hoping to improve her health while connecting with other women in her community... And guess what? She’s been coming back ever since!

From yoga, to arts and crafts workshops, to social connection groups, Sumaya has joined and loved a number of our health and wellbeing programs. Attending our fitness classes each week has improved her flexibility and strength, while our hands-on art workshops have given her a chance to get creative, have fun, and form friendships with other women.

One of her favourite memories from our Centre has been cooking with the women in her social connection group and making a dish that reminded her of home in Iraq (the dish is pictured here — our Health Promotion Officer has tried it and can personally attest to how amazing it tastes!).

For Sumaya, it’s not just the variety of programs that keeps her coming back. It’s the friendships, the sense of community, and the feeling that she belongs.

Did you know that someone is diagnosed with gynaecological cancer every 6 minutes?

Gynaecological cancer involves the female reproductive organs, with the most common types being uterine (endometrial), ovarian, vaginal, vulvar, and cervical cancers. It can also affect the fallopian tubes and placenta, although these are rarer.

Most gynaecological cancers can be difficult to detect, so it’s important for us to stay in tune with our bodies and look out for the following signs and symptoms:
• unusual vaginal discharge
• unusual bleeding between periods, after menopause, and during or after sexual in*******se
• persistent abdominal or pelvic pain, pressure or discomfort
• changes in your bladder and bowel habits
• digestive changes including bloating, swelling or feeling full too quickly when eating
• weight loss
• itching, burning or soreness in the pelvic region
• lumps, sores or wart-like growths

If you experience any of these signs and symptoms, it is important that you speak to your healthcare provider.

For cervical cancer specifically, there is an additional way to look after our health, which is undergoing regular screening! The Cervical Screening Test is available to any woman aged between 25-74 years old and is offered for free at our Centre. You can choose to complete the screening with the help of a healthcare professional or do a self-collected test at home or in a private space.

So this Gynaecological Cancer Awareness Month, take a moment to look after your health and call us at 02 9790 1378 to book your cervical screening appointment now.

We recently rounded up a group of women from our Centre and headed to the BreastScreen Clinic in Bankstown for a special breast screening fieldtrip!

From getting screened together in a private, welcoming space to enjoying morning tea and chitchatting with one another, the day was all about the women looking after their health while having fun doing it… But hey, don’t just take our word for it — watch this reel to hear what some of the women had to say about the experience!

A big thank you to the team at BreastScreen NSW for their support in making this a positive experience for the women in our community.

Last week, our CEO Mariam Mourad, a current member of Minister for Women Jodie Harrison’s NSW Women’s Advisory Council, facilitated a member-led presentation on female ge***al mutilation/cutting (FGM/C). This is a key public health issue affecting women and girls across NSW, with the highest presentation of FGM/C experiences reported in South Western Sydney. As the NSW Government’s advisory body on issues affecting women and girls, the Council provides an important platform for raising issues and advocating for more equitable policy outcomes for women across the state.

The presentation brought together women and experts with lived, clinical, and research experience of FGM/C, including presenters:

• Hassanatou Diallo — a Registered Nurse and woman with lived experience as a victim of FGM/C, who shared how FGM/C impacted her life and identity.
• Lynda Smith — Clinical Midwifery Consultant for the NSW Education Program on FGM/C, who spoke about the current services and supports available, including the Dandelion Support Group, which will be hosted at our Centre starting in November.
• Dr Olayide Ogunsiji — Associate Professor of Nursing at Western Sydney University, who shared insights from her research on FGM/C and proposed a gold standard of care; specifically, a holistic, multidisciplinary healthcare unit that takes care of women beyond midwifery or childbirth.

Together, these presentations highlighted the voices and experiences of women with FGM/C, how our health system currently responds to their needs, and the gaps remaining in providing more comprehensive and culturally appropriate care for them.

The meeting concluded with a recommendation from the Council that the same presentation be delivered to Minister for Health Ryan Park and Minister for Women Jodie Harrison. The Council also committed to writing to Jodie Harrison to elevate the issue and highlight the need for further action.

As part of our ongoing advocacy work, Mariam and the team at Bankstown Women’s Health Centre are proud to have supported the presenters in preparing for this meeting, helping ensure FGM/C is recognised as a priority health issue requiring meaningful action across NSW.

How do we break down barriers to women’s health?

We spoke with our previous Operations Manager, Kerrie Newcombe, about why improving women’s access to culturally safe and appropriate health services is vital to the health and wellbeing of our community.

Kerrie discusses some of the gender-specific challenges women can face when seeking care and why we need to think beyond simply having services available.

Outreach, accessible transport, and flexible models of care can play an important role in reaching women who may otherwise struggle to engage in services — particularly those experiencing vulnerability or marginalisation.

Healthcare should meet people where they are, not create another hurdle for them to overcome.

It’s time for the official goodie bag unveil! Inside were some thoughtful self-care goodies, including a generous $100 voucher from The Lip Lab Australia, personal hygiene and beauty products, and little health trinkets.
