Ozempic and Mounjaro have transformed conversations around diabetes and weight management. But could their potential extend to type 1 diabetes?

That question is at the heart of PhD research by Amanda Purcell from the Kolling Institute.

On the latest Tomorrow’s Medicine Today, Amanda sits down with James Elliott and Matt Doan to unpack her research, challenge some common misconceptions about type 1 diabetes and explore what it takes to turn scientific discovery into a clinical trial.

It’s a fascinating conversation about curiosity, collaboration and where diabetes research could take us next.

🏆 National recognition for stroke care excellence

Congratulations to the teams at Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Hospital and Royal North Shore Hospital, both recognised with a 2026 Excellence Award from the Australian Stroke Coalition.

Adding to the achievement, Hornsby Hospital Stroke Unit was named the best performing hospital in Australia, receiving a National Stroke Target Award for consistently exceeding national stroke care benchmarks.

Years of dedication, innovation and teamwork have transformed stroke services at Hornsby, leading to an outstanding 99% access to specialist stroke unit care. Most importantly, this means more patients are receiving expert, coordinated stroke care when they need it most.

Exciting new research at the Kolling Institute is aiming to prevent heart attacks and improve our understanding of early-onset bowel cancer.

Professor Gemma Figtree will lead a new Centre of Research Excellence investigating how silent coronary artery disease can be detected and treated before it leads to a potentially life-threatening heart attack.

Using blood biomarkers and advanced imaging, the research aims to identify disease earlier, when people still feel well and there is time to intervene.

Meanwhile, Professor Mark Molloy will help tackle the concerning rise in early-onset colorectal cancer as part of the ARTEMIS Centre of Research Excellence.

Mark and his team will analyse unique samples from the Kolling Institute’s bowel polyp biobank, using their expertise in proteins and immune cells to help uncover why the disease develops and ultimately improve prevention and treatment.

Congratulations to Gemma, Mark and everyone involved in this important research.

📚 A lifelong love of reading can start from day one.

Newborn babies at Royal North Shore Hospital have received a special delivery of books to celebrate International Literacy Day.

For 19 years, dedicated volunteer Wendy Bean has helped deliver books to babies in RNSH’s maternity ward and Neonatal ICU (NICU), encouraging families to share stories and discover the joy of reading together from the very beginning.

Among this year’s recipients was little Paxton, currently receiving care in the NICU. 💙

It’s a simple gift, but one that can help build connection, communication and a lifelong love of reading.

Celebrating 60 years of the Corner Shop at Royal North Shore!

For six decades, generations of volunteers have given their time, energy and care to support the Royal North Shore Hospital community.

Together, they’ve raised more than $5 million for equipment, services and initiatives across the hospital. Just as importantly, they’ve provided something that can’t be measured in dollars: a friendly face, a listening ear and a sense of connection.

Thank you to every volunteer, past and present, who has helped make the Corner Shop such a special part of RNSH. Here’s to 60 extraordinary years of community, kindness and giving. 💙
