Yesterday was a proud day to be a Victorian.

After what’s been a really difficult time for many in our state, this moment feels especially important.

We applaud the tireless work of Elders, advocates, communities and organisations who have contributed to this historic milestone, not just over the past decade, but across generations.

The Treaty process is not just symbolic - it’s delivering real, structural change that will enrich everyone in our state, including:

⚫ A permanent, democratically elected Assembly that puts decision-making power in the hands of First Peoples
🟡Truth-telling and healing across communities, including the teaching of true history in Victorian schools
🔴 Recognition and celebration of First Peoples through official events and reviving First People's place naming
⚫ A First Peoples’ Institute to grow leadership
🟡 Investment in infrastructure to maintain community facilities

On Economic Abuse Awareness Day, we wanted to share some of Joanne's story.

When Joanne was referred to our team through her financial counsellor, she was understandably distressed by the fine debt looming over her, accumulated by her ex-partner.

A successful application to the Family Violence Scheme enabled her eligible fines to be withdrawn, giving Joanne the fresh start she deserved. Another reason why access to support from Community Legal Centres is so important!

Like all forms of family violence, economic abuse is more likely to occur to women. have some fantastic resources for women seeking information and support.

This week, our Housing Justice team attended a community forum as guests of the South Yarra Public Tenants Association (SYPTA) to discuss the rights of residents at 259 Malvern Rd in South Yarra. Residents recently found out that they would be among the next to be re-located as their high rise is redeveloped by the Victorian Government.

❌It was clear from the forum that residents in attendance do not want to leave their homes. Many are elderly, and are deeply concerned about losing their connection to community, place and services.

At , we are committed to working with residents, community leaders and stakeholders to ensure residents understand their rights. We continue to advocate for transparency, respect and dignity for residents during this process.

Any community member impacted by the relocation who is concerned is encouraged to reach out to Southside Justice for further support - 💬 interpreters are encouraged and available for those who request.

The third Sunday Forum in the series being curated by Progressive Port Phillip on Community Safety, will be held next Sunday, 11 August.

The Forum will:
 Unpick local crime data
 Look at how other councils and communities are taking innovative steps to prevent crime
 Explore better urban design
 Highlight how more love for public spaces improves safety.

Local services in the forefront of creating a safer community, including Southside Justice, will help inform the forum.

Expert in crime prevention, Anika Dell, will outline how a number of communities are leading the way in local safety.

This week Southside Justice took action demanding a further response to the anti-trans rally protest. In partnership with Switchboard Victoria, the Victorian Pride Lobby and Transgender Victoria and the support of 50 leading advocacy organisations wrote to the Victorian government asking for urgent anti-vilification reforms to protect LGBTIQ Victorians, an independent investigation into police conduct at the rally and a statement from Victoria Police addressing the harm this event has caused.
