Wednesday two SP members participated in a pre bushfire season exercise with Water NSW. The multi agency presence on the day builds partnerships and promotes readiness for responding to bushfires in the coming season.

A busy week for Sandy Point Rural Fire Brigade.

On Wednesday, crews responded to a bush fire on Heathcote Road with our neighbouring NSW Rural Fire Service brigades and Fire and Rescue NSW. The fire was quickly brought under control and extinguished, crews later returned to reports of a tree alight, this was in the burnt area and a patrol was conducted to ensure no further risks were present.

On Saturday, members were out training in the local area practicing our skills and training new members. While out we also conducted review of the local fire trails to ensure they are ready for the upcoming fire season.

29/07/2026 Heathcote Road

Advice: Heathcote Rd, Menai (Sutherland LGA) - Monitor Conditions.

Firefighters are working to control a grass fire burning to the east of Heathcote Road and west of Mill Creek in the Menai area, south of Sandy Point. There is no immediate threat to property, however residents in the area of Old Illawarra Road, Menai, should monitor conditions.

Traffic in the area along Heathcote Road may be affected as crews work from alongside the road and smoke from this fire may be visible in the local area. Please only call Triple Zero (000) if you see an unattended fire.

4 members recertified for Helicopter operations with Remote Area Fire Teams for the upcoming fire season. With an El Niño on the radar there is heightened risk of bushfires this year and preparation starts now. Get Ready Weekend is September but there’s no time like the present to make a start.

Saturday spent supporting another hazard reduction burn in the Royal National Park. Good weather for burning off the high fuel loads lessens the risk in summer.

Working at Bangor on Saturday saw members trying to beat the rain and get a Hazard Reduction in before a few days predicted wet weather. Unfortunately the burn didn’t take and was postponed until finer and dryer conditions. Our crew out at Waterfall made some decent progress on their task with NPWS.

Have you seen the smoke in the air? Dry weather is allowing the RFS to catch up on some priority Hazard Reduction work. The cooler months allow for the burning off of surface fuels to help prevent bushfires or lower the intensity should one occur.
The brigade has been involved at Illawong, Yarrawarrah, Woronora Dam and Southern Highlands.
