Hon. Mike Gaffney MLC member for Mersey bringing attention to some of the key issues affecting men's health and wellbeing in Tasmania during a speech to the legislative council yesterday.

He specifically highlighted the important role of TasMen following the continued success of the recent Tasmanian Men's Gathering as well as the growing demand for men's groups across the state, creating spaces for genuine, authentic connection.

Thanks for your advocacy Mike.

Yesterday, it was refreshing to see the Hon. Mike Gaffney MLC, Member for Mersey, raise important issues around men’s health and wellbeing in Tasmania during his speech to the Legislative Council in the Tasmanian Parliament.

He highlighted a significant gap in government funding and called for a more proactive, community led response. He also spoke about ongoing gaps in social and structural supports, while acknowledging the encouraging “groundswell” of community action and new approaches emerging to address these challenges.

As he noted, “The recognition of the importance of the health and wellbeing of men and boys in Tasmania should be led by statistics.”

The Hon. Member also highlighted a number of positive initiatives currently underway through MRT, including the Building Pathways Program, as well as upcoming events such as the Men Against Violence community conversation and the Men’s Health Forum.

He further acknowledged the important role of TasMen following the continued success of the recent Tasmanian Men’s Gathering (TMG), and the growing demand for men’s groups across the state which provide spaces for genuine connection, support, and belonging.

He concluded by saying:
“We all have a role to play in supporting men,” and “No Tasmanian man should have to walk the path of life or reintegration alone.”

Last call for the Tasmanian Men’s Gathering

If you’re on the fence, or there’s a man in your life who could benefit from being listened to and joining a vibrant caring community, now’s the time to reach out.

Without men’s work…. I would have been fine. I would be plodding along doing my best, in an okay job and navigating split parenting. With men’s work, I am with my partner, raising kids with gentle strength, and aligned with my values in a leadership role at work.

This Friday 5pm – Monday 2pm

Bruny Island

There are a few tickets left – ticket sales close Tuesday night.

Reduced price tickets are available – several men have donated to make it possible for men of any means to attend. Such is the spirit of generosity in this community.

Sometimes people talk about ‘secret men’s work’ to describe what happens within a men’s gathering or circle. This is not a good description.

Some of what happens within a men’s group is indeed sacred. Ritual, respect, silence, integrity, challenge, vulnerability, honesty.

Most of what happens isn’t spoken about because the experience, the learnings, the rawness… it’s very different for every man, and usually can not be captured in words or conversation.

Confidentiality is a part of creating a safe space, but secrecy plays no part in our work.

If you’d like to know more about what happens in a men’s circle, or at our yearly Gathering, or if you know a man that could benefit from a greater depth in his experience, contact us for more information.

This year’s Tasmanian Men’s Gathering (TMG) is almost sold out - only a handful of tickets remain.

If you’ve attended before, you already know how powerful this weekend can be. If you haven’t, maybe this is your year.

Relationships give our lives connection, love, meaning and growth. For most of us, our very first relationship is with our mother. This year, we’ll be exploring what that relationship means to you — and how it has shaped the man you are today.

If you’d like to secure one of the remaining tickets, get in touch soon. If cost is a barrier, a small number of subsidised tickets are available for men who need support.

Just two weeks to go.

I’ll never forget my first Tasmanian Mens Gathering (TMG). The rawness of 100 men letting down their guard and authentically sharing their struggles, doubts and vulnerability. Witnessing men modelling deep listening, powerful questioning and beautiful silence. The amazing space of not trying to fix each other, not pretending anyone ‘knew’ the way, but rather allowing each man to experience and journey the three days in whatever way they needed. Powerful. Challenging. Awakening.

The weekend has led to deep friendships, authentic connections, and challenging conversations. It’s also led to men’s sharing circles, leadership training, singing groups, walking groups, swimming groups and even a bit of dancing!

It’s not all fun in the sun though. I know I’m going to be challenged. I know for there to be growth, I need to explore what makes me uncomfortable. I know my ego will start making excuses as soon as tickets go on sale!

The journey has already begun! Hope to see you there.

As TMG 2026 approaches, we invite you to embark on a transformative journey as a volunteer, helping us to create an unforgettable experience at the gathering.

We are currently seeking a few men for the kitchen. These men get free access to the TMG, but their primary focus is working with the kitchen team to ensure a culinary success.

Every year, a team of dedicated volunteers selflessly supports new men in discovering the magic of our gathering.

Men from all walks of life contribute their unique talents as part of the set up crew, group leaders, care team, kitchen crew, gate keepers and content team.

If you've been inspired by a TMG in the past, we encourage you to pay it forward this year.

Contact us for more information and visit our website to explore the countless ways you can make a difference.

Who really benefits from men's work?

When I attended my first men's work weekend, it was definitely about me. I wanted some answers. More freedom.

Greater happiness and meaning in my life.
Interestingly, when I returned home, I didn't feel full of new ideas, techniques or abilities. In fact it was the opposite.

Instead, I remembered a peaceful space in my heart free from worries and doubts.

Do you know who benefited most from this space?

Everyone.

Every single person I came in contact with had my full attention and deep presence. It was phenomenal. Being able to truly listen without filtering through my own baggage.

I'd love to say that my life was perfect from that weekend on, but... every day, every interaction is a chance to practice this presence.

If you know someone who could benefit from this experience, point them towards our annual gathering.
