๐Ÿณ Why cooking at home is one of the best things you can do for your health

Cooking at home isn't just cheaper, it's one of the simplest ways to eat well. When you cook your own meals, you're in control of what goes in, meaning less added salt, sugar and unhealthy fats, and more fresh veg, fibre and flavour.

Here are a few reasons to get in the kitchen this weekend:

๐Ÿ  You control the ingredients and portion sizes
๐Ÿ’ฐ It's almost always cheaper than takeaway
๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘ง It's a great way to spend time with family and friends
๐Ÿฅ— You can pack in extra veg without even trying

You don't need to be a MasterChef! Even a simple homemade meal is great. What's one meal you'll cook at home this week? Tell us below! ๐Ÿ‘‡

Burning, tightness or pain in the chest is a common sign of a heart attack that you shouldn't ignore. But sometimes, symptoms can look like other things. ๐Ÿ‘‡

For many people, the signs can be subtle, vague and hard to detect. ๐Ÿ˜”๐Ÿซ€

Females are also more likely than males to experience symptoms other than chest pain. That's why it's important to know what to look out for and seek help if you're concerned.

A healthy heart is your best protection against heart disease and heart attacks.

You can reduce your risk by:
> knowing the risk factors for heart disease
> talking to your doctor about 'cardiovascular screening'
> exercising regularlyโ€”aiming for 30 minutes of moderate to intense activity daily
> finding ways to reduce stress, like slow breathing, meditation or yoga
> eating a healthy, balanced diet high in fibre and low in saturated fat and sugar
> reducing your alcohol consumption
> quitting smoking.

What's in Season This Spring

๐ŸŒฑ Spring has sprung โ€” and so has your fresh produce list!

One of the easiest ways to eat well (and save money!) is to shop with the seasons. Right now in Queensland, keep an eye out for:

๐Ÿฅฆ Veg: asparagus, broccoli, zucchini, capsicum, peas, spinach, spring onion
๐Ÿ“ Fruit: strawberries, pineapple, mango, avocado, citrus

Seasonal produce is picked at its peak, so it's often fresher, tastier and cheaper than out-of-season alternatives. Next time you're at the shops or your local market, grab a few of these and get creative in the kitchen!

What's your favourite spring veg or fruit? Tell us in the comments ๐Ÿ‘‡

If youโ€™ve been around the QCWA for any length of time, chances are you have a jar or two (or more) of chutney sitting in the fridge! ๐Ÿ˜„

If youโ€™re looking for some healthy and tasty ways to use up the rest of your jar, weโ€™ve got a few ideas for you:
๐Ÿฅช Spread it on a salad sandwich or wrap for a sweet and tangy flavour boost
๐Ÿฅ• Mix it with natural yoghurt to make a quick dip for veggie sticks or wholegrain crackers
๐Ÿ— Add it to a marinade or glaze for chicken or roasted vegetables
๐Ÿฅ— Stir it through a salad dressing with a little olive oil and vinegar
๐Ÿง€ Pair it with cheese and wholegrain crackers for an easy snack
๐Ÿณ Add a spoonful to eggs or a breakfast wrap for extra flavour

Then, once the jar is empty, you will have space in your fridge for the next one! ๐Ÿงก
