Vietnam Veterans Day — 18 August

Today, the RSL Roma Sub Branch remembers and honours the men and women who served during the Vietnam War.

On Vietnam Veterans Day, we pay our respects to those who made the ultimate sacrifice, those who returned home carrying the physical and emotional scars of war, and the families who supported them throughout their service and beyond.

We remember the 521 Australians who lost their lives during the Vietnam War, and the many thousands who served.

A Vietnam Veterans Day service will be held at the Cenotaph on Bungil Street, Roma, at 5:30pm this evening.

We invite members of the community to join us as we remember and honour those who served.

Today, we commemorate the arrival of the first Australians to serve in the Vietnam War.

On 3 August 1962, the first members of the Australian Army Training Team Vietnam (AATTV) arrived in South Vietnam, marking the beginning of Australia's military involvement in the conflict. Initially comprising just 30 highly experienced military advisers, "The Team" was tasked with training and advising South Vietnamese forces.

What began as a small advisory mission would grow into more than a decade of service. Between 1962 and 1973, around 60,000 Australians served in Vietnam. Of those, 523 lost their lives and almost 2,400 were wounded.

Today, we honour the courage, professionalism and sacrifice of all who served in Vietnam, and acknowledge the lasting impact of the war on veterans, their families and all those affected.

Lest we forget.

Condolences to the family. Very sad news. It certainly highlights the inherent risk involved in the training that our special forces soldier's carry out.

The RSL Roma Sub Branch would like to acknowledge and thank the following Businesses and Organisations for their kind and generous assistance and donations to ensure our ANZAC day commemoration went smoothly.

First and foremost, Maranoa Regional Council for their assistance of in kind labour, provision of equipment, traffic management plans, staffing, and much more.

Maranoa Laundry for their kind donation of the tablecloths for the day.

Bakearoma for the donation of food items for the gunfire breakfast and the luncheon.

Lions Club of Roma Queensland for the loan of their Marquee, and Bain Maree for the catering at the RSL hall.
