JUST IN: Three Adelaide men have been caught with dozens of snapper illegally taken from the Spencer Gulf.

After a tip-off to the Fishwatch hotline, their vehicle was stopped by police near Port Wakefield with fisheries officers finding the 40 fish in the boot.

The snapper and fishing equipment were seized with the men expected to be charged and handed court dates for possessing snapper taken during a closure.

Snapper fishing remains banned in the Spencer Gulf, Gulf St Vincent, west coast and Kangaroo Island zones until June 30, 2027, with fishing currently only permitted in the south-east zone under strict catch limits.
