💛 Dolly — A Heart That Should Never Have Had to Break.
Dolly’s story isn’t just sad — it’s the kind that stays with you. The kind that makes you stop in your tracks to read how much one young cat has had to endure. 🥺
She began her life as a devoted young mum, doing everything she could to protect her newborn babies. But the world around her wasn’t kind. She was trapped by a member of the public who didn’t understand her fear, her instincts, or her love for her kittens. Two of her babies were taken from her too young and had already died. The member of public said there were four other kittens they were using as bait to help catch her. They said if someone didn’t come and get her, they would shoot her. Dolly fought with every ounce of her little body dragging two kittens out of the trap to safety before she herself was caught.
When volunteer extroadonaires Heidi and Warwick made the two hour trip to get her and the kittens, only two were there. It seemed members of the public hadn’t even bothered to look for the two missing kittens that Dolly had taken out of the trap to safety. They spent a couple hours searching in the dark, knocking on doors, piecing together the truth. It became clear that the remaining kittens had been discarded. It was a 2 hour long drive back to Adelaide and the poor Mumma cat who was traumatised losing some of her babies and suffering this ordeal, cried/‘sang out’ the whole trip home for babies she would never see again. That’s the moment she was named ‘Dolly’ eg for her emotional, vocal singing all the way home. This was a 9 hr trip in its entirety for these volunteers.
She was placed ins foster home which was completely foreign to her having come in as a stray. While trying to learn what life in a home and strange environment is all about and still mourning the loss of two babies, she got ringworm. She was stressed being with other cats in a new environment and while grieving, still hormonal, still trying to understand a world that had only ever hurt her. She clashed with another cat. She was stressed. She was confused. Her two babies grew up and got adopted. She was trying to deal with this loss then had to move again. Another strange place; new smells, new people, another cat, no babies. Then ringworm took hold. Her heart was heavy already, now her body needed healing too. Five weeks of medication saw her ‘ringworm free’.
All of this — all this loss, fear, upheaval, and healing — and she is still not even a year old.
And yet… Dolly has overcome all these hurdles and showing the world what a delightful girl she can be. She’s learning that gentle hands exist. She is soft, sensitive, and so much braver than she knows. She wants to trust. She wants to feel safe. She wants a world that finally stops shifting beneath her feet.
Dolly doesn’t need perfection, she just needs someone who will give her some time and patience, who sees her not as “a shy cat” but as a survivor who has carried more grief than any baby should. Someone who understands that healing takes time, and that love — real love — is quiet, steady, and earned slowly.
She loves to play and will entertain you with TV her antics. She loves chin rubs and has started to learn how amazing snuggles on a lap are!
If you want to change a life in the most profound way, Dolly is waiting. She has been waiting her whole short life for someone who chooses her gently, completely, and forever.
