Recently we were lucky enough to speak to 70 senior school students about healthy relationships and empowerment at Adelaide Oval, thanks to Centacare Catholic Community Services.

Hosted by Power Community Ltd, the Power to End Violence Against Women & Empowered Leadership Day brought students together to hear different perspectives on leadership, relationships and respect, while taking part in activities designed to build confidence, inclusion and positive leadership skills.

Due to upcoming staff leave and based on feedback from young people, Fill Up Your Cup will be paused until further notice. Hitting pause is also a great opportunity to explore how we can better meet the needs of our community.

What is 'the why' behind this group:

1️⃣ Young people aged 18–24 are at a higher risk of loneliness and social isolation
2️⃣ Young adults want more face-to-face, low-cost/free opportunities to connect with others

We're committed to creating these sources of connection for young people aged 18–25 and are excited about what this may look like in the future.

Last week, we kicked off our very first BEAM session at Wandana Community Centre and were thrilled to welcome 7 young people along. For a first session, we couldn't be happier with that turnout!

BEAM is our LGBTIQA+ social connection group. The name stands for Belonging, Expression, Acceptance, and Meaning - values that reflect the supportive, inclusive, and welcoming experience we aim to create for every young person who attends.

Last week, our Youth Reference Group went to in Adelaide for some team building 🎳

Our social media guy (on the right of this sketch) forgot to take a team pic 🙄 but thankfully the very talented Monroe brought their sketchbook and drew a few members of the group. This is too good not to share with our audience!

Young people come to our BEAM group to find like-minded young people who identify as LGBTIQA+, and leave feeling more understood, less alone and less isolated.

Yesterday we held the third edition of our EA Sports FC 26 Tournament, this time at Wandana Community Centre.

While these tournaments are about school holiday fun and connecting, they're also about soft exposure to mental health support.

Young men are less likely to seek mental health support than females. We know this at our own centre as in the last 12 months, 28% of young people who accessed were male.

With young men, we need to build trust over time. They're unlikely to voluntarily access or even contemplate using a service until they've heard about it, and just like previous tournaments, many of the boys weren't aware of headspace.

These tournaments aim to introduce the idea of mental health support in a way they will remember.

The dust has settled since the Push-Up Challenge ended, and there are a few people we want to thank. Have a scroll to find out who!

Our centre raised an incredible $7,490, with 85 legends participating, and 112,547 push-ups completed. Money raised will support the likes of:

🏳️‍🌈 our BEAM group, which is proving to increase the confidence and wellbeing of young people who attend,
☕our Fill Up Your Cup group aiming to reduce loneliness and social isolation in 18–25-year-olds,
⚽our school holiday activities like FIFA Tournaments which see young men step foot into a centre they may not have otherwise accessed,
🙌our Youth Reference Group who consistently help us in the community but also help shape our service and keep young people at the heart of it.

In the last 12 months, we saw 629 young people walk through our doors. We know there are still many young people in the western suburbs contemplating accessing a mental health service who might just be convinced after a positive interaction with headspace in the community. The money raised supports our efforts to reach these young people, so thank you to this amazing community!
