⚠️ HIGH FIRE DANGER RATING – OBERON

The Fire Danger Rating for the Bathurst, Lithgow and Oberon Local Government Areas (LGAs) tomorrow, Monday 12 October 2026, is HIGH.

đźš’ Oberon HQ RFS urges residents to remain vigilant and exercise caution.

Permits are required for burning activities in the Chifley Lithgow District. However, there is currently no Total Fire Ban declared.

If you are already conducting a burn, please monitor weather conditions closely and ensure your fire remains under control. If you are considering starting a new burn, we strongly encourage you to postpone it until conditions ease throughout the week.

Your safety and the safety of our community are our priority. Please help us reduce the risk of unwanted fires across the Oberon area.

Could a fire truck access your home in an emergency?
When bush fires occur, firefighters need safe and reliable access to your property.
Truck sizes can vary, but a good consideration is our Cat 1 tanker which can be up to 7.8
metres long, 2.5 metres wide, and require a turning circle of approximately 22 metres.
Overgrown vegetation, narrow access tracks, low branches, soft ground, or locked gates
can delay emergency response and place crews at risk.
Inspect your property access before fire season and ensure emergency vehicles can enter
and exit safely. Good access helps firefighters protect your home, your family, and your
community.
The NSW Rural Fire Service recommends property access tracks and driveways have:
• A minimum width of 3.5 metres.
• A vertical clearance of 4 metres from overhanging branches or structures.
• Adequate turning space for large fire appliances.
• All weather surfaces capable of supporting heavy vehicles.
• Clearly accessible gates and entrances.
Clear access can help emergency services reach your property quickly when it matters.

Police and Jake’s family are concerned for his welfare, and they are appealing to the community for assistance in locating him.

Welding, grinding and other hot works can quickly cause bush and grass fires.
Activities such as welding, grinding and cutting metal can throw sparks several metres
and ignite dry grass, paddocks or bushland, even when conditions don’t seem extreme.
If you’re planning hot works on your property:
• Check your local Fire Danger Rating and under no circumstances undertake any
works on a day with a total fire ban.
• Check the weather and avoid working on hot, dry or windy days.
• Clear dry grass and leaves from the work area.
• Keep water, a fire extinguisher or knapsack close by.
• Never leave hot works unattended.
• Monitor the area for at least 30 minutes after finishing.
Hot works should be postponed if it’s not safe to proceed. One spark is all it takes to
start a fast moving fire. For more advice on fire safety and property preparedness, visit
the NSW RFS website or contact your local brigade.

Campfires on the beach may look harmless — but they are not safe and are often illegal.
Many beaches in NSW are part of National Parks or reserves, where campfires are not
permitted at any time, regardless of weather or fire danger conditions.
Even outside National Parks, fires on beaches are dangerous. Heat can remain hidden
beneath the sand for hours, creating hot embers that can seriously burn people and can
reignite and spread into nearby dunes or bushland.
If you come across a fire or hot embers on a beach:
• Do not assume it is safe or fully out.
• Drench the area thoroughly with water — not just sand.
• Stir the sand and embers, then apply more water.
• Check for heat. If it’s warm, it’s not safe.
• Keep people well clear, especially children.
If there is an active fire, smoke, or you cannot fully extinguish it, call Triple Zero (000).
Help keep our coastline safe for everyone by avoiding beach fires and acting
responsibly if you encounter one.

Today marks the official start of the bush fire season, with the Bush Fire Danger Period beginning in most NSW Local Government Areas.

If you’re planning on conducting a burn, you’ll require a fire permit from your local Fire Control Centre or brigade. Fire permits help ensure fire is used safely and reduces the danger to you, your property and the community.

Residents and land holders must know the rules when it comes to the use of fire. Along with having the required fire permits, you need to notify your local fire authority and neighbours of your intent to burn at least 24 hours in advance.
