Two new Audiomoth Eco-acoustic Recorders were deployed for the first time today in Gurnang State Forest.

These two audiomoths were funded by a donation from the Veolia Mulwaree Trust, and effectively doubles our capability to collect eco-acoustic biodiversity data.

Oberon Citizen Science Network has a permit to conduct non-commercial research in local State Forests collecting bio-diversity data via non-invasive eco-acoustics and photographic methods. This data is then contributed to the NSW Bionet Bio-Diversity database to enhance data quality for future environmental and development decision making. Data may also be contributed to other databases such as iNaturalist, FeralScan and the Atlas of Living Australia as appropriate.

To date Oberon Citizen Science Network has detected a wide variety of species using our audiomoths including microbats, birds, frogs, Eastern Grey Kangaroos, Brush Tail and Ring Tail Possums, Long Nosed Bandicoots, Spotted Tailed Quolls, and foxes and we are using our data to train an AI identifier to speed up future processing and identification of calls.

If you are interested in getting involved with collection of biodiversity data in the Oberon LGA, consider joining Oberon Citizen Science Network.

Nice logo!

Nice logo!

Excusing my lateness to post this - but I was engaged by the Australasian Bat Society and Australian Mammal Society earlier this year, to design the logo for their 2026 joint conference!

Featuring a Tiger Quoll (Dasyurus maculatus), Mountain pygmy possum (Burramys parvus) Eastern False Pippistrelle (Falsistrellus tasmaniensis) and a Bogong moth (Agrotis infusa), this commission was a great challenge to try my hand at drawing non-bat animals for once 😄

I need to have a closer look at my budget and other projects on the go, but I will try my best to attend to listen to the fantastic presenters, and see the logo in action!

It is with regret and sadness that Oberon Citizen Science Network advises of the passing of one of our members, Richard Harrowell.

Richard was a committee member during our first year, and passionately interested in electronics.

Our condolences to Richard's family and friends.

Not likely in Oberon but you never know.
