We recently gathered at Balam Balam Place in Merri-bek to celebrate the conclusion of NEWPRINT 4, sharing a meal, reflecting on the year, and recognising the achievements of an incredible cohort of emerging producers.

Over the past year, this group have developed their skills, built industry connections and strengthened their creative practices through workshops, mentorship, conversation and shared experiences.

A huge thank you to the NEWPRINT 4 cohort: Beryl Mwamb, Kudzai Mupanemunda, Minh “Minhy” Huynh, Urlik Mageza, Carlos Meza, Pranati Narayan Visweswaran and Loli Bobadilla. Your generosity, curiosity and willingness to support one another helped make this year’s program such a meaningful experience.

One of the most rewarding parts of the program was seeing participants learn from, challenge and encourage one another. The conversations, friendships and creative connections that emerged throughout the year became just as important as the formal program itself.

Also a very special thank you to Shop Bao Ngoc for the wonderful catering on the night 💚

We’re excited to follow the journeys of this talented group of producers and see what comes next!

Emerging Filmmakers Workshop and Film Screenings

This October, MAV (Multicultural Arts Victoria) and ACMI present a special program with internationally acclaimed Indonesian artist and filmmaker Riar Rizaldi.

Working across film, sound and installation, Rizaldi’s practice explores the intersections of science, technology, labour, ecology and belief, moving between documentary, fiction and speculative forms.

The program includes Asian Futurisms & The Fluid Lens: Essayistic Filmmaking, a two-day workshop for emerging creatives, alongside a screening program featuring Rizaldi’s acclaimed feature film Monisme and a selection of short works spanning his career.

During the month of May, Isthmic Imaginaries brought together artists, researchers, elders, and communities through an exhibition, workshops, film screenings, and public conversations.

Exploring memory, displacement, language, and cultural continuity, the project created opportunities for exchange across generations, geographies, and ways of knowing.

Thank you to curators Dr Glenda Mejía and Dr Tania Cañas, the participating artists, collaborators, and everyone who joined us throughout the program.

Culture Cooking Workshops: Shepparton Culture Kitchen celebrates International Women’s Day with a hands-on, community-led food experience!

Join us for six cooking stations led by women of Shepparton Culture Kitchen, sharing recipes, techniques and the cultural knowledge behind each dish. Move between stations, taste incredible food, and hear stories of ingredients, traditions and migration.

This is a space to connect, learn and celebrate culture through cooking together.

Celebrating regional artists is a massive part of what we do here at MAV. On January 29th, we had the pleasure of celebrating the first artwork installed as part of the Intercultural Gardens Empty Plinth Project in Ballarat!

The celebration recognised 'Nesting,' a work inspired by native animal shelters and ideas of home and belonging, by Ukranian-Australian artist Kathy Holowko. We also announced the next artist for the project. Melbourne-based artist Jingwen (Jina) He will create the 2026 Empty Plinth artwork, which will be installed in June next year.

The Empty Plinth Project is a partnership between Multicultural Arts Victoria and the Creative City Ballarat, supporting new public art each year and creating opportunities for the community to connect with contemporary intercultural art in the Intercultural Gardens.

We’re inviting expressions of interest for voluntary Treasurer and Secretary roles, commencing February 2026. These roles support our governance, financial sustainability and care-led leadership, and are suited to people who want to contribute their skills to the multicultural arts sector.
