Thousands of people stop to photograph Buttons and Bobby every year — but few know the remarkable story behind them.

🎬 After hundreds of hours of volunteer work, we're delighted to finally share THE WHALE IN THE TREE — our 40-minute community documentary.

Discover the story of an ancient red gum, internationally acclaimed sculptor Silvio Apponyi OAM, and the community that turned an extraordinary idea into one of Middleton's most loved landmarks.

Hot off the Middleton press ... Lea Brooks & Richard Pocklington have just sighted the first Southern Right Whale mother and calf for the 2026 season! About a kilometre off shore at the Goolwa end of Middleton. So excited! Photos to follow. Yippee. Thanks whale spotters for letting us know.

🎨🌸 Exciting news, Middleton! 🌸🎨
We're thrilled to announce a brand-new community art project called Art in Bloom!

Over time, we'll replace our ageing w**e barrel planters with stunning hand-painted feature pots that celebrate everything we love about Middleton – our beaches, our community, our creativity and our coastal lifestyle.

Each pot will become a unique piece of public art, created by local artists, bringing colour, character and joy to our Main Street for locals and visitors alike.

The Whale in the Tree is a moving 40-minute documentary that tells the remarkable true story of how an ancient fallen red gum tree was transformed into Buttons and Bobby – the Southern Right Whale mother and calf sculpture that now overlooks Ratalang Basham Beach in Middleton.

It's a story of imagination, determination, community spirit and seeing possibility where others see only what has fallen.

On a winter evening in June, the streets of Victor Harbor will glow. 🐋✨

Glowing whale lanterns - each one handcrafted in community workshops, each one carrying a piece of the Kondoli story; will move through Warland Reserve, where the parade meets the sea for a final moment of shared storytelling.

This one is worth putting in the diary now. The Kondoli Lantern Parade is free, luminous and open to everyone. Gather along the route to watch, or join the procession and walk alongside the light.

Either way, it's the kind of evening you'll want to be part of.
