🌱 350 little darlings in the ground! 🌱
For the sixth year in a row, Friends of Hindmarsh River Estuary and Victor Harbor Coast Care joined forces this week to plant 350 seedlings within Tom Stephens Memorial Reserve.

Each year, FoHRE selects one of the Hindmarsh River Reserves for a little extra care and attention, and this year Tom Stephens Memorial Reserve was our focus.
Throughout the year, our volunteers have been hard at work removing weeds, preparing planting areas, and getting the site ready for this major planting event.

This joint planting day was the grand finale of our activities at the reserve for now, before we turn our attention to propagating.

The seedlings are now settling into their new home and, with a bit of luck and some seasonal rain, will soon be putting on plenty of growth.

All plants were lovingly propagated by FoHRE’s propagation team, with valuable support from the City of Victor Harbor Open Spaces & Environmental Team and Biodiversity Victor Harbor’s nursery crew.

This year, we focused on rebuilding tree communities by planting seedlings alongside established plants that are already thriving in the reserve. By pairing compatible species and creating diverse plant groupings, we're helping to establish resilient habitat across larger areas.
Navigating the flood-prone zones presented a few challenges, but these areas provided the perfect opportunity to introduce grasses and other species expected to flourish in wetter conditions.

Experimentation, observation and learning are all part of helping the Hindmarsh River Reserves survive and thrive into the future—and our group loves exploring new ideas that can make a difference.

A huge thank you to everyone who rolled up their sleeves and helped make the day such a success! 🌿💚

🌿 River Reds again! 🌿
This week, 15 beautiful River Red Gums were delivered to FoHRE from CVH and planted within the Hindmarsh River Estuary.

Next time you're visiting the Cudmore Billabong or the meander cut-off, take a moment to wander slowly and look around. You'll spot both FoHRE-planted and naturally propagated eucalyptus trees, all stretching skyward and helping to shape the future landscape of the estuary.

The photo shows one of this year's seedlings tucked safely within a protective circle of nasturtium and recycled longifolia cuttings from previous years. This natural shelter will help shield the young tree from wind, slow floodwaters if they arrive this season, and keep the seedling protected from foot traffic along the walking trail.

Although this little River Red currently sits between two towering giants that dominate the skyline, in years to come all three trees will join canopies, creating a wonderful haven for local wildlife.

One of the most rewarding parts of being involved with FoHRE is watching these gradual transformations unfold—seeing today's seedlings become tomorrow's landmarks and witnessing the skyline slowly change for future generations. 🌳💚

🪑 Take a Seat…!
Over the past few years, FoHRE has celebrated several wonderful achievements, and one of our favourites has been the addition of more garden furniture throughout the Hindmarsh River Estuary.

As we spend time in the Estuary, we often notice places where a seat, table, or bench would provide the perfect spot to pause, relax, and enjoy the surroundings. We work closely with the CVH Open Spaces & Environmental Team to suggest locations, and their staff carefully assess each site to determine the most suitable position before installation.

Finding the best location isn't always easy, but we greatly appreciate the expertise and effort that goes into every installation. Thanks to this collaboration, there are now even more places for our community to stop, rest, and take in the beauty of the Hindmarsh River Estuary.

Our latest addition is a new table and bench setting between Wattle and Cudmore Reserves.

So next time you're passing by, take a seat, enjoy the view, and make the most of this beautiful space we all share! 🌿

The first little darling...

The Friends of Hindmarsh River Estuary (FoHRE) have been removing Acacia longifolia ever since we began caring for the Hindmarsh River Estuary six years ago. When we come across a large, healthy longifolia tree, we work with Monarto Zoo, where the foliage is put to good use as food and enrichment for some of the zoo’s animals. This partnership helps us reduce the spread of a species that is not well suited to our local reserves for several environmental reasons.

At the same time, FoHRE has been actively propagating and planting local native wattles to replace the longifolia trees we remove. Over the years, we have successfully collected local seed and grown Acacia pycnantha (Golden Wattle), Acacia acinacea (Gold Dust Wattle), and Acacia provincialis (Swamp Wattle).

This year, we were excited to add Acacia melanoxylon (Blackwood) to the list, thanks to the generosity of Biodiversity Victor Harbor, who kindly shared some of their surplus stock with us.
Blackwood is indigenous to our area and can grow to around 15 metres tall. It produces masses of beautiful flowers and can even be used as part of a fire-retardant boundary planting. However, because of its size and root system, it is not recommended for small backyards, particularly near sewer mains or connections.

The photo shows the very first Blackwood we planted in early April. At just three inches tall, it was tiny, but within a month it has thrived and is clearly loving its new home!
To give our young seedlings the best chance of success, FoHRE installs tree guards around them. These guards help protect plants from curious wildlife, accidental damage, and larger animals that might knock them over.

We are also grateful to the City of Victor Harbor (CVH) for supporting our group with supplies such as tree guards and canes. Their assistance is greatly appreciated.

So next time you're out and about and spot a tree guard, take a peek inside—you might just discover one of our future giants growing away!

🌱 Tricky Planting… but FoHRE rose to the challenge! 🌱

Our FoHRE team recently tackled planting seedlings in a very remote and difficult-to-access area — no easy task when surrounded by huge amounts of cut vegetation and uneven terrain.

Figuring out where and how to plant each seedling took patience, teamwork, and a lot of creative thinking.
Working in buddy teams wasn’t just about safety; it also encouraged constant discussion, problem-solving, and the sharing of ideas between members and across teams. Every planting decision became a collaborative effort.

Adding to the challenge was the looming invasion of winter chickweed and ivy — both aggressive creepers that can quickly overwhelm young plants. To give our new seedlings the best chance to thrive, monthly maintenance visits will now become part of the journey.

But this is where FoHRE truly shines! 💚

This year, our members have been putting even more thought into creating native flora communities — carefully considering which grasses, shrubs, and trees naturally grow best together. Rather than simply placing plants randomly in the ground, we are building supportive ecosystems where native species can flourish side by side.

Little by little, we are already seeing the benefits of this approach, and we hope you can see the difference too.
Every seedling planted is another step toward a healthier, stronger natural environment for the future. 🌿

What a fantastic morning with so many wonderful community supporters joining us! 🌱

Phase One of the Pearson Wall Garden project is now complete, with over 200 new plants in the ground. This is very much a “try and see” adventure, as not many plants have thrived in this location before, so we’re excited to watch how these new plantings settle in over the coming months.

For now, the City of Victor Harbor Council Open Spaces & Environmental team has recommended using grasses, as many species are well suited to the hot, dry conditions of the garden.
Once our regular planting season wraps up, the Friends of Hindmarsh River Estuary may add a few more plants if we have leftover stock available.

A huge thank you to our FoHRE members and the local community for rolling up their sleeves and helping bring this project to life! We’re also very grateful to the CVH Open Spaces & Environmental team for supplying the water cart — that extra drink will give the new plants the best possible start and help improve their survival rate.

Looking ahead, FoHRE will also be propagating additional grasses later this year in preparation for Phase Two in 2027. 🌾

Planting Season Is Underway!

With more than 300 plants allocated to the Tom Stephens Memorial revegetation program, the season has started strong despite a few challenges along the way.

A blocked river mouth caused water to spill into the reserve, creating difficult conditions for our planned planting.
While Stage 1 presented some challenges in accessing and planting the drier areas, the work was completed successfully thanks to the dedication of the FoHRE team.

FoHRE still has three stages to complete this planting season, and the momentum is building.

Since April 1, the group has already planted more than 500 seedlings in support of local revegetation efforts.

Moring Fog drifting in created a spooky feel while we were trying to plant!

The SMELLS and SOUNDS!

With the Tuesday down pour the Billabong flooded with fresh run off from Cudmore Road.

It was delightful standing at the top of the Billabong listening to the birds chatting, watching them have a dip in the water to clean themselves, to smell that fresh rain on foliage and to hear the water running through the storm drain. WHAT A SIGHT!
