🌿 Community Planting Day at Drysdale Cemetery – Tomorrow! 🌿

Join Geelong Cemeteries Trust and Bellarine Catchment Network for a hands-on morning of community connection and environmental care at Drysdale Cemetery.

Together, we'll be planting indigenous trees, shrubs, and grasses to enhance the cemetery’s natural beauty and ecological value, creating peaceful, biodiverse spaces that support reflection, remembrance, and local habitat restoration.

Anybody is welcome to join us and volunteer, and we have a great time working together learning to identify weeds and native plants and connecting with members of your community.

🦋Tuesday 9th of June 10AM – 12PM
🦋Bunnywoods, Point Lonsdale, on Wadawurrung Country.
🦋Meet in Royal Park Caravan Park. Park along Jordan or Williams Road, cross the road towards the foreshore and enter the park via the 'exit only' driveway. Be aware of traffic crossing the road and entering the park. Look for the Bellarine Catchment Network vehicle and signage.

We provide gloves, safety glasses, water and pull some weeds, have a chat and enjoy nature!

This activity is supported by the Borough of Queenscliffe who care for our coastline.

🦋We welcomed Afghan men from to Swan Bay for a canoe session facilitated by the Marine and Freshwater Discovery Centre, where participants learned about the incredible Ramsar wetlands here on the Bellarine 🦋

Did you know Swan Bay supports nearly 200 bird species and welcomes thousands of migratory shorebirds every summer? These amazing birds travel from Alaska, Siberia and the Arctic to rest and feed in Swan Bay before making their return journey to the Northern Hemisphere in April.

As these migratory birds begin their journey north, Swan Bay will soon welcome the critically endangered Orange-bellied Parrot from Tasmania. During winter and spring, these rare parrots roost and feed in the coastal saltmarsh, particularly on Beaded Glasswort.

A huge thank you to Corangamite Catchment Management Authority for providing opportunities like this to help educate our communities about the importance of protecting Ramsar wetlands and their unique biodiversity. 💚

🍃Meet at the north-east entrance corner of Murrk Ngubitj Yarram Yaluk, Wallington, Wadawurrung Country. Please note this week we are entering from the second gate entrance further east down Swan Bay Road.
🍃Wear a hat, long pants and a long shirt. BYO water bottle. Morning tea provided.
🍃No need to register, just turn up!

Last week marked National Reconciliation Week — an important time to reflect, learn, and recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, cultures, and histories across Australia.

The 2026 theme, All In, reminds us that reconciliation is everyone’s responsibility.
We were grateful to welcome Ash Skinner from Wadawurrung Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation to Point Richards Flora and Fauna Reserve for a community cultural education session, proudly supported by Bellarine Bayside

Through a walk and talk on Country, Ash shared insights into Wadawurrung cultural heritage and the deep connection Wadawurrung people have with the Bellarine Peninsula.

This event was delivered as part of our Pride in Place project, supported by the Victorian Government Tiny Towns Fund, helping foster education, connection, and pride in place within our community.

What an incredible day of community connection and environmental action at our Portarlington Cemetery planting day! 🌿

Together with the community and in partnership with the Geelong Cemeteries Trust , we planted an amazing 500 indigenous trees, shrubs, and grasses to help strengthen and support Portarlington’s wildlife corridor.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make the day such a success. Every plant in the ground is a step towards healthier habitats and a more connected landscape for local wildlife. 🌼

Last week we celebrated the incredible community of the Borough of Queenscliffe at the 2026 Community Service Awards Night. 🌿

Our amazing volunteers from the Borough Coastcarers were nominated for Community Group of the Year for their ongoing work restoring and protecting the biodiversity of Queenscliff and Point Lonsdale. Through their dedication, they’ve been helping remove invasive weeds from precious Coastal Moonah Woodland habitat.

Congratulations to all the volunteers on this well-deserved recognition and thank you for the incredible work you do for our environment and community. 💚

🍃What a wonderful day celebrating the Official Opening of Bellarine Memorial Park. 🍃

It was fantastic to see the community come together to recognise this important new space alongside Geelong Cemeteries Trust , Wadawurrung Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation , and Bellarine Catchment Network.

The day began with a beautiful Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony led by Ash Skinner from Wadawurrung Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation, acknowledging the deep cultural significance of Country and the importance of caring for the landscape.

Visitors enjoyed guided walks through the site towards Yarram Creek, explored the master plan, connected with the Geelong Cemeteries Trust team, and took part in hands-on landscape and planting activities focused on enhancing the local environment and biodiversity.

Thank you to everyone who attended and contributed to such a meaningful community day. We’re proud to be part of creating spaces that support reflection, connection, culture, and care for the environment. 💚
