It's still a green drought. Soil moisture is slowly increasing, but many of the normal watering holes are dry. Please provide water for local wildlife. https://www.facebook.com/share/18RMoxdSuH/

Bird bath reminder 💧🐦

Fresh water is important for wildlife all year round—even through the cooler months.

A bird bath can support local visitors such as superb fairy-wrens, silvereyes, New Holland honeyeaters, eastern rosellas.

Don't forget to add some low shallow dishes on the ground for blue tongues lizards, frogs, insects and others.

A few simple tips: keep water fresh, add a stone or branch for perching, place it near shrubs or garden cover so birds feel safe.

On cooler days, birds still need a drink and often enjoy a quick splash too.

Do you have a bird bath in your garden? Have you noticed any visitors lately?

Delicious berries for birds and lizards. Imagine how welcome they would be in our dry landscape. Einadia nutans, or nodding saltbush has naturalised in my yard now. It is meant to be widespread and common, but its very tasty foliage is quickly overgrazed by rabbits and livestock. Nodding saltbush is a very hardy, dryland herb. It climbs or trails up or over structures, or in tougher conditions it will be a small mound. We think it looks prettiest in shade or when its well watered, as the leaves become lush and blue-green. Most saltbushes are entirely edible, but cooking is recommended.

Join us for BLG’s AGM, Wednesday 13 May, 7pm at Marcus Hill Hall with guest speakers online from Owl Friendly Margaret River.

🦉 Boyd and Karen will talk about their work building awareness about the impacts of Second Generation Anticoagulant Rodenticides (SGARs) on Masked Owls and other wildlife, and the successful national campaign for the APVMA to recommend SGARs be declared Restricted Chemical Product for use only by individuals who meet specific training and licensing requirements. What needs to happen now?

Dr Boyd Wykes, is an ornithologist and environmental manager, who in his retirement to Margaret River was enjoying discovering an unexpected population of SW WA’s little known Masked Owl when he became aware that many rodenticides being used without constraint by householders and businesses were likely a major threat through secondary poisoning to not only these owls but a wide range of diurnal and nocturnal wildlife.

Karen Majer is a science communicator and conservationist with zoology and media qualifications. She coordinates the Owl Friendly Margaret River rodenticide campaign.

Brief AGM formalities will be followed by Boyd and Karen’s presentation and then supper. All welcome. 🦉

Eek rabbits!!! This is the reason our group works hard to help control rabbits on the Bellarine. The destruction they cause to our landscape and flora is devastating.
This warren shows severe erosion, w**d infestation and the stress their tunnels put on trees. No native flora or fauna can survive with rabbits.

CoGG’s ambitious draft plan to protect Nature is out for public feedback until Thursday 30th April. 🌳
Follow the links below to CoGG’s Have Your Say, and let them know you support their plan to protect our native plants and animals, and their habitats. 🦜🐸

Have Your Say on the future of nature in Geelong! 🌿

The City of Greater Geelong has prepared a Draft ‘Plan for Nature’ to set the future direction for biodiversity programs in Greater Geelong and they are seeking as many survey responses as possible from our community! The Plan is scheduled to go back to Council for adoption on the 23 June 2026.

🌿 Have Your Say Survey 🌿

Your feedback is critical in making this a valuable Plan for Nature. It is estimated the survey will take approximately 10 minutes to complete.

Need help providing feedback? Here are our suggested topics that you could make comments about:

🌿The need to adequately fund the Plan and it’s outcomes
🌿The importance of working with Wadawurrung
🌿How we can get more people engaged in nature
🌿The need to assist existing nature volunteer groups across our region
🌿How we could scale up existing successful programs
🌿Asking corporations and businesses to play a role
🌿How we can apply planning regulations properly
🌿How to incentivise landholders to revegetate their land
🌿How to better protect land using covenants or by acquisition
🌿The need to monitor landscapes and species to assess impact.

Feedback closes at 5.00pm 30 April, 2026. Click on the button below and scroll to the bottom of the webpage!
