Last Tuesday, Susan Barton House came together for a Biggest Morning Tea in support of the Cancer Council!

It was a morning to remember, with residents from Squires Place, Allanvale and Ballan joining our aged care home in Bacchus Marsh.

The whole community got behind the event, with our Hotel Services team preparing the morning tea, residents helping prepare decorations and staff across care and clinical teams supporting throughout.

More than 60 coffees were served and $433.90 was raised for the Cancer Council. What an incredible effort from everyone involved!

Meet Glenda, a resident at Pascoe Vale Gardens Retirement Village.

After many years living in Glenroy and surrounding suburbs, Glenda made the decision to downsize from the family home she could no longer manage on her own.

She enjoys the natural light and peaceful views from her serviced apartment and continues doing the things she loves. Each week, she prepares and emails materials for her parish, spends time on creative projects with the village’s craft group and enjoys regular visits from her family.

Moving didn’t mean leaving life behind. For Glenda, it means continuing life with comfort, support and connection around her.

At mecwacare, we’re always looking for ways to support the comfort, safety and wellbeing of the people who live with us.

We’re beginning a pilot of LenexaCARE® at Trescowthick Centre. Developed by Australian MedTech company Lenexa Medical, it uses smart sensors and real-time insights to help care teams monitor residents more closely, support early intervention and assist in preventing pressure injuries.

This pilot is about learning how new tools can sit alongside the hands-on, person-centred care our teams provide every day, helping us continue to support residents with more complex needs.

It was wonderful to welcome so many people from the local community to our recent Open Day at mecwacare Allanvale!

Guests enjoyed guided tours, conversations with our team about aged care and plenty of fun interactions with Abi, our friendly humanoid companion. Families also took part in arts and craft activities while enjoying coffee and light refreshments throughout the day.

Thank you to everyone who joined us - it was a pleasure sharing a glimpse into life at our aged care home in Altona Meadows and connecting with members of the community.

Today, we celebrated National Volunteer Week with a high tea to recognise and thank the incredible contribution of our volunteers 💙

More than 200 volunteers joined us for the afternoon, giving everyone the chance to meet and reconnect with fellow volunteers and colleagues from across mecwacare. Abi, our Happiness Assistant, welcomed guests on arrival with entertainment and light-hearted conversation.

We presented milestone service awards recognising 5 to 25 years of contribution, alongside our Volunteer of the Year awards: New Volunteer of the Year, Volunteer of the Year and ACVVS Volunteer of the Year.

To our volunteers: thank you for bringing warmth, companionship, reassurance and kindness into the lives of the people we support. We are deeply grateful for everything you do and the care you bring each day.

This year’s National Volunteer Week theme is Your Year to Volunteer – a reminder that there are many ways to get involved at any stage of life.

At mecwacare, that’s reflected in volunteers like Pat (80) and Madeline (25). Two people from different generations, both sharing a commitment to their community.

Pat has been volunteering at our Malvern East Op Shop for 20 years. She values the everyday conversations and small moments that come with supporting her local community.

Madeline began volunteering at the Noel Miller Centre during her university placement and stayed on because of the relationships she built with residents. At the aged care home, she enjoys coffee club mornings, biography writing and long conversations.

While their journeys are different, both show what Your Year to Volunteer looks like in practice: connection, companionship and community.

Today, we’re celebrating International Nurses Day and our incredible nurses at mecwacare!

Our nurses work in complex environments where clinical care and human connection sit side by side. They support residents, clients and families in situations that require skill, judgement and compassion.

We’re proud of our nurses and grateful for the kindness and commitment they bring to our teams and the people we support. 💙
