Avalon Centre

Avalon Centre Avalon aims to meet unmet needs and to offer a helping hand to people who have been forgotten, overlooked or left behind.

We opened in 1987 at North Caulfield and were established originally as a centre of creativity and natural healing. However now we are expanding and reaching out! For many years Avalon focused its activities at the Centre and whilst this provided an important support for all those who visited, it became apparent that it was time for Avalon to move out into the community and explore unmet needs; to

make people aware that Avalon – both the Centre and the bus - is there and to give everyone the opportunity of becoming a part of Avalon. In pursuit of this goal Avalon has taken the approach of putting no limits or restrictions on the creative ways we can help people in need. This means stepping right outside the square to embrace every challenge that comes our way. Our Mission statement is 'To help when we can, where we can and in whatever way we can"

This National Volunteer Week, Avalon Centre celebrates the incredible people who give their time, energy and compassion to support others in our community.

Our extraordinary volunteer team contributes hundreds of hours each month, offering practical support, kindness, dignity and hope to people experiencing homelessness and hardship.

From sorting clothes and non-perishable donations, to providing haircuts, massages and manicures at monthly Makeover Days, our volunteers bring care and humanity to every interaction.

We are deeply grateful to the teams who hit the road our "Moving Wardrobes”, distributing much-needed clothing and bedding to our friends on the street. And to our renovation volunteers who help transform properties into welcoming homes for new tenants of Avalon Homes for the Homeless.

The generosity and care of our volunteers creates real change every single day. Whether offering professional skills, practical help, friendship or compassion, our volunteers are at the very heart and soul of everything we do.

From Avalon to each and every volunteer who support us and our work we say: Thank you for your commitment, kindness and unwavering belief in helping others. Your impact reaches far beyond the hours you give.

A new red door...

Yes its another door opening which means another opportunity to reduce homelessness!

This property - number 18 (yes, we said "number 18!") - has been purchased with funds raised at the extraordinary "Property Unites " 2025 annual charity luncheon.

This home is going to require a lot of love and a lot of hard work. Along with a new bathroom, we need to render, paint, tile, repair and much more.

Most of the work will be done by Avalon skilled volunteers! How grateful we are to have these wonderful people on board. That said, we can always do with more help. If you've an hour or two, half or even a day to help make this house a home, we'd love to hear from you.

Please get in touch [email protected] or call (03) 9569 2240.

A big shout out and sincere thanks to our great friends at ; ; ; and for their exceptional and hugely generous support. We couldn't do this without you.

More on number 18 coming soon!

A place to call home - Avalon reaches 17 properties

Avalon Homes for the Homeless has just purchased its 17th property, a milestone made possible through the extraordinary support of The Peter & Lyndy White Foundation.

Avalon Centre's founder Deborah Holmes OAM and a team of selfless volunteers have spent days preparing the property to provide a fully furnished, warm and welcoming haven.

For our new tenants, this home represents a life-changing moment. Until now, they have been living in their car. They now have what is everyone's right, not a privilege - a place to call home.

Our sincere thanks to The Peter and Lyndy White Foundation for their wonderful and generous support of our work and community. You are truly helping us meet unmet needs, and helping those who have fallen through the cracks.

Makeover Day the Avalon way

There’s something extraordinary about the first Monday of every month at the Drop-In at Avalon Centre. These are called "Makeover Days."

Each Makeover Day is filled with small moments that make a big difference. Everyone is welcome. No judgement, no barriers - just an open door and a friendly face.

Drop-In Centre friends can get a haircut, shave, makeup, manicure or perhaps even a relaxing massage at no cost. Whatever their circumstance, our friends can pick out fresh clothes or essential provisions, and share a cup of tea and a meal with good company.

It’s all part of Avalon’s commitment to meeting unmet needs in a way that is human, inclusive and uplifting. We've created a space where people feel comfortable, cared for and connected.

Special thanks to all our personal groomers and Drop-In team who volunteer and make these days so impactful and special. And to of our comms team who produced our Makeover Day video.

You too can help us meet unmet needs. Follow this link to learn about corporate sponsorship, donations and volunteering https://avaloncentre.org.au/what-we-do/avalon-drop-in/
