🌱 Spring Community Planting Day! 🐨

On Sunday, we headed to Jan & Terry’s property in Witta for a big morning of koala habitat restoration!

Despite a little rain, our amazing community came together to plant a massive 750 native plants — and what looked like a huge job was made so much easier with plenty of helping hands! 🌿

A huge thank you to everyone who came along, got their hands dirty and helped us get all 750 plants in the ground. We couldn’t have done it without you! 💚

And a special thank you to QTFN for funding the koala food species planted as part of the event, helping us create better habitat and more food resources for our local koalas. 🐨🌳 Thanks also to Jan & Terry for welcoming us onto their property and caring for the trees after our visit!

Don't forget to sign up for our next tree planting day on Friday, 11th September!

🌿 What a big weekend for community koala conservation! 🐨

On Friday, the Roving Restorers returned to Sam’s place to tackle a serious patch of invasive Privet. The team absolutely smashed it out, leaving only some massive stacks of w**ds behind! 💪🌿

With the Privet cleared, we got stuck into replacing it with native tubestock as an infill planting, helping to restore and strengthen koala habitat on the property.

A huge thank you to everyone who came along and made it such a great morning, and of course, thanks to Sam for having us on the property and supporting our work! 💚

One less patch of w**ds, and more native habitat for our local koalas. 🐨🌱

Echidnas play an important role in our local ecosystems. As they forage for ants and termites, echidnas use their claws and snouts to dig through soil, leaf litter and rotting logs. This natural digging helps disturb and aerate the soil, redistribute organic matter and create small pockets where water and nutrients can infiltrate.

Their foraging also makes them part of the wider food web, connecting the health of soil, insects and vegetation within our forests.

🌱 So what does an echidna need to thrive?
Healthy echidna habitat is more than just trees. They rely on a diverse, functioning forest floor — including:

🍂 Leaf litter and fallen timber
🪵 Rotten logs and natural debris
🐜 Healthy populations of ants and termites
🌿 Dense native groundcover and vegetation
🌳 Connected areas of bushland for movement and foraging

This is why protecting habitat means protecting whole ecosystems, not just individual species. For echidnas, threats include habitat clearing and fragmentation, loss of ground-layer habitat, inappropriate fire regimes, introduced predators, and being struck by vehicles while moving between patches of bushland.

At Hinterland Bush Links, our habitat restoration work aims to rebuild these interconnected ecosystems — removing invasive w**ds, restoring native vegetation and improving habitat connectivity for the many species that depend on the forest floor. 🌿

Next time you spot an echidna digging through the leaf litter, remember: you’re watching a tiny ecological engineer at work. 🦔💚
Have you spotted an echidna in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland recently?
