Community service announcement!

Incase you didn't already know

Rebel Sport in Chirnside Park have two recycling Programs.

1 for a wide range of sports balls

And the other for shoes- not only sports shoes.

Read the box in pic for information.

This is a Victorian Shop Stewardship Program that is a pivotal part of the circular economy where all items are reused to make new items instead of digging up or creating raw or virgin materials.

This is a partnership between the Sport Association, Tread Lightly and Rebel

See link below

https://treadlightly.asga.com.au/collection-locations-sportsballs/

Planet Earth does not have enough resources to feed our appetite.

Please reconsider and rethink before you buy new
Other options

Buy & get second hand- use Buy Nothing Page on Facebook and Op Shops

Reuse and repurpose

Gift and donate

Repair all items at your local repair cafe

Recycling should comes last for most things.

It's all about caring enough to change habits and behaviours.

The next repair cafe session is Sunday July 5th 10am to noon

Be there or miss out

On the tail end of National Volunteering Week I would like to take a moment to thank my incredible team of 15 volunteers who donate their time, expensive tools, skills and knowledge to the Yarra Valley community every month.

We have a wonderful team of people who love fixing things and others who love supporting their community in non repair roles. Without them our doors do not open.

We are passionate about keeping items out of landfill and in use for longer. We hate waste and so much is absolutely unnecessary.

Over the last three years the team has collectively repaired over 300 items- weighing over 400kgs.

That's around 10 items every 2hr session :)

They have diagnosed over 600 items and many needed spare parts which were sourced and the item usable again. Some were not repairable for a range of complex reasons.

We, as a society would benefit from returning to a culture of repair as the the next step when an item breaks. Take time to value our items and not buy new.

So thanks to each and every Volunteer current or past who has contributed to fixing things.

**More broadly these are the statistics in Victoria**

Some sobering data from the Victorian government's website

Victoria's waste profile:

In 2023- 2024 total waste generated by Victorian's was 14.23 million tonnes.

Sent to landfill 4.5 million tonnes of waste. 30%

Recovered and/or recycled 9.73 million tonnes 70%

We are doing better but more can be done and it starts with you!

The circular economy is here to stay - that's where every item is turned into something new when at end of life.

We need to think of our children and generations after us who also need resources to live a stable life.

That is what sustainability is all about. Having enough to use now and into the future without compromising quality of life for humans, the environment and business.

The three pillars of sustainability.

Thanks for your time and PLEASE take a moment to thank the team with some kind words and share what item you had fixed.

Cheers,

Rowan

Hello everyone and Happy Friday!

Beautiful blue skies today.

Did you know that you can collect all your medication blister packs and recycle them at your local pharmacy.

Direct Chemist and Chemist Warehouse accept them.

The box is usually tucked away at the back of the shop.

Well worth recycling as metal is a high value product.

Here is my collection from the last 5 months.

Every small act of kindness to our environment makes a difference when we all unite!

Drop a comment and let us know where you recycle your blister and medicine packets.

Our next repair session is Sunday 14th June 10am to noon

See you there!

Cheers
