A community member came to Encircle seeking support after a recent court appearance connected to a complex legal matter.

Although newly employed and living in private rental housing, they were struggling to stay afloat while facing rental arrears and a risk of a tenancy breach, ongoing court matters, limited access to food and essentials, financial hardship, mental health vulnerability, and difficulty managing daily tasks.

When they reached out, Homestay Brief Intervention Case Manager, Dean, provided calm, practical and compassionate support. He ensured they had immediate access to food relief, advocated to protect their tenancy, and linked them with legal services and financial counselling. His encouragement also helped them reconnect with mental health care, with all the support paced to match their capacity and priorities.

Within three weeks, they were moved from acute crisis to relative stability. Their housing was secure, finances were improving, and they felt grounded and able to plan ahead with renewed confidence.

Awesome work Dean and the Homestay team! 👏👏

Recently our Encircle Redcliffe Neighbourhood Centre became the space for a heartfelt moment where two friends were able to reconnect.

People experiencing homelessness often hold deep friendships and celebrate each other’s wins, even though staying in touch is harder without stable accommodation.

One community member, recently discharged from ICU, arrived feeling emotional and overwhelmed. He had missed a call from us while in hospital and came in to ask about housing options.

While he was here his close friend, who he hadn't seen in a long while, walked through the door. The friend had come into our neighbourhood centre to share with our Brief Intervention Worker, Joel, that he had been offered a room up north and was excited to be settled again.

“There’s only one person I know who could have done this - Joel. Even though I was angry and swearing when I was speaking with him, he didn’t take it personally, and he helped me.”

During the reunion, the friend shared how proud he was to see his friend getting back on his feet, returning to work and securing safe housing for himself and his belongings.

Moments like this highlight the strength of connection within our neighbourhood centres and the steady, human impact of Joel’s patience and genuine care when people need it most.

Our Intake and Response team (I&R) play a pivotal role in connecting the community to the most suitable service or program. The intakes they receive are varied including women and children escaping domestic violence, those dealing with financial hardship, mental health concerns, and substance and alcohol misuse.

Recently, a woman in her 60s reached out to Encircle after feeling increasingly isolated and overwhelmed by financial stress. Having visited the neighbourhood centre before, she felt safe returning to a calm, respectful space where she could talk openly about her situation.

In a single phone conversation with our I&R Officer Rebecca, she shared how rising costs and growing loneliness were affecting her wellbeing. With Rebecca’s gentle guidance, the lady explored practical options for immediate financial support and was encouraged to reconnect with community activities she once enjoyed.

Together, they identified pathways that matched her comfort level, including re-engaging with her local neighbourhood centre and considering volunteering in a literacy and numeracy program.

After speaking with Rebecca, the client accessed the support she needed and felt genuine relief and a renewed sense of connection and confidence. Her story is a reminder that sometimes one compassionate conversation can change the direction of someone’s day, or their whole outlook.

Awesome work Rebecca! 👏👏
