Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Women's Shelter

Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Women's Shelter Our home is safe and secure, and all women are treated with dignity and respect. Every donation benefits the women who seek our care.

HKWS was established in 2015 in response to an identified need in the Hornsby Ku-ring-gai area to provide a safe place for women experiencing domestic violence and homelessness. The Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Women’s Shelter provides temporary supported accommodation and outreach services for women experiencing domestic abuse and homelessness. We empower women through opportunities for personal growth an

d the development of life skills, for a future that is self reliant. Our Board advocates for women, working with all levels of government to bring about policy change. Our shelter receives no government funding and to keep our door open we rely on support from our community. We are a volunteer run community based organisation, operating in the Women's Community Shelters network.

🎉 Exciting NEWS - We Did It ! 🎉

We are thrilled to share that HKWS has secured a new property that will provide vital transitional housing for mothers and their children escaping domestic violence and homelessness.

This incredible milestone means that, for the first time, we will be able to support not only women, but mothers and their children as they rebuild their lives in safety and dignity.

To our amazing community, donors, volunteers, schools, supporters, local businesses and partners — thank you. This simply would not have been possible without you. ❤️

A special thank you to Community Bank Lindfield and Brady Marcs Buyers Advisory for helping make this dream a reality.

Together, we're opening more doors to safety, hope and a future free from violence.

Watch this space... we can't wait to bring you along on the journey. ✨

Last night, the HKWS team was honoured to attend the National Domestic Violence Remembrance Day event hosted by Hornsby Shire Council alongside the Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Domestic Violence Network and Ku-ring-gai Police Area Command.

Together with our community, we paused to remember and honour the women and children whose lives have been lost to domestic and family violence, while also reaffirming our shared commitment to prevention, support and change.

The unveiling of the commemorative purple bench was a powerful and moving moment ... symbolising remembrance, hope and the importance of continuing these conversations within our community.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone involved in creating such a meaningful evening, including the beautiful performance by the Hornsby Girls High School Choir.

Today, on National Domestic Violence Remembrance Day, the HKWS team joined Mayor Christine Kay, HKWS Patron Cr Barbara Ward and many others from across our community to quietly pause and remember the women and children whose lives have been taken by family and domestic violence.

It was a really meaningful morning spent coming together in reflection, support and hope.

As part of the ceremony, Mayor Christine Kay unveiled a memorial park bench, alongside the planting of a symbolic Tibouchina tree ... a reminder of remembrance, healing and our shared commitment to creating safer futures for women and children.

May is Domestic Violence Prevention Month ... a time for all of us to keep having conversations, learning more, speaking up and standing together as a community.

Because respect, equality and safety should never be optional!

✨💕 Taking a moment to be present and hold space 🌟💕

At HKWS, we are incredibly proud to support women from many different cultural and faith backgrounds, always creating a space that is inclusive, respectful and welcoming to all... acknowledging celebrations such as Easter, Passover and many others, while recognising that respect and inclusion go beyond any one day!

Recently, we took time on International Women’s Day with residents to express what matters most to them through beautiful, meaningful creations...

Each of our residents made a flower, decorating the petals with words that are meaningful to them... things they appreciate, personal goals, or positive ways they see themselves. Some shared single words, while others wrote heartfelt reflections about their experiences at the shelter... the room was full of positivity, laughter and creativity, and it was beautiful to see everyone connecting, expressing themselves and celebrating women.

Moments like this remind us why we do the work we do!
