November with Wildcare – another huge month ahead!

Can you believe November is just around the corner? We've got another action-packed month coming up, with Wildcare groups right across Tasmania heading outdoors to care for our wild places, wildlife, and natural and cultural heritage.

There are lots of opportunities to get involved:

Working bees around the state:
🔸We're kicking off the month with Wildcare Deslacs tackling weeds at Clifton Beach Estate.

🔸Our Friends of Lake St Clair head off for five days of track work on the Frenchmans Cap Track (registrations have now closed for this one).

🔸Friends of Wellington Park will be helping protect threatened Eucalyptus ovata forest.

🔸Friends of the Great Western Tiers have a weeding day planned.

🔸To round out the month, Crag Care Tasmania is holding a two-day working bee at White Water Wall, completing important reinforcement and stabilisation work on the cliffside track. Professional trail builders will be on hand to guide the technical work, and volunteers can join for one or both days.

There's also a LOT happening at Cradle Mountain! From track maintenance and revegetation to wildlife monitoring and a six-night Pandani Moth expedition, check out our separate post for all the details.

🔸Catch us at the markets!
Our Friends of the OBP will be out and about at markets across southern Tasmania, including South Arm, Long Beach Twilight Market, Sorell, Howrah, Woodbridge, Salamanca and Molesworth. It's a great chance to stop by for a chat, pick up some gifts for yourself or family and friends, and support the conservation work of our Friends of the OBP, Friends of Melaleuca and Friends of Deal Island.

Get involved - head to our website to register for events. https://wildcaretas.org.au/events

And if you're not already a Wildcare member, consider this your invitation to join! For just $40 a year, you can be part of as many of our 55 volunteer groups across Tasmania as you like and join a community that cares for Tasmania's wild places and wildlife.

Our Wildcare volunteers have a huge month of action coming up at Cradle Mountain, with walking, working, sanding, painting, planting and monitoring!

Here's a quick look at what's on the agenda.
🐾 Wildcare Cradle Mountain Volunteers have two big spring weekend working bees planned, with volunteers getting stuck into a range of conservation and maintenance activities. Expressions of interest for both weekends are already full - thanks!

🐾 Another team will be heading out to work on Scott Kilvert Hut and the Lake Rodway Track.

🐾 A planting morning will focus on revegetation around the Cradle Mountain Visitor Centre.

🐾 A decade of wombat monitoring: Wildcare Cradle Mountain Volunteers are also hosting an information session celebrating a decade of data from the Cradle Mountain wombat monitoring program. With presentations, discussions and refreshments, it's an opportunity to learn more about this important long-running citizen science project. This follows the revegetation working bee - so why not make a day of it?

🐾 Our Friends of the Pandani Moth are also heading to Wulinantikala / Cradle Mountain for a six-night expedition to establish an annual monitoring program for this remarkable species. Monitoring takes place for a few hours each evening, leaving the days free to explore and enjoy this spectacular part of Tassie. If you're keen to join then get in quick - registrations close 31 October.

A big shout out to all our Wildcare volunteers - the range of work you do and the dedication and time spent caring Tasmania's wild places and wild life is absolutely amazing!

Members - head to the website to register for upcoming working bees, in Cradle Mountain and all around Tasmania. https://wildcaretas.org.au/events

And if you're not already a member, this is your invitation to join us!

You've seen us share photos and updates about the work our Wildcare Friends of Lumeah Point do with Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies - IMAS to help protect this live-bearing sea star that's endemic to Tasmania.

Here's some more information from IMAS' Dr Beth Strain which emphasises why this project and work is so important. ⭐️

Myrtle Forest Working Bee - Friday 30th October 2026

We're excited to have our first working bee with the Parks and Wildlife Service for 2026 after we had to cancel the last one in February.

We will meet at Myrtle Forest where there is some vegetation clearing and possibly some drain clearing along the tracks out there and maybe even some track repairs depending on volunteer's capabilities. Please bring your own work gloves.

Depending on volunteer numbers we hope to also work part way up either the Collins Cap or Collins Bonnet Tracks and clear vegetation encroaching on the track.

There are two creek crossings required and the track is steep in sections, so volunteers will require reasonable fitness for this activity.

We have a lot more planned with PWS over the coming months, so please show your interest by coming along.

When: 9.15am till 1.30pm, Friday 30th October
Where: Myrtle Forest Picnic Ground Car Park
No pre-registration required. All welcome.

Note that all equipment is supplied at working bees except work gloves, but each person needs to provide their own food, drinks, hat and sturdy footwear and wear clothing suitable for work and protection from vegetation and weather conditions.

Our Wildcare groups have been out and about at community events and markets recently, and it's great to chat with people about the important work we do right around Tasmania.

Here are a few photos from last weekend at the Tasmanian Nature Festival, featuring the Friends of the OBP and Jason from the Pacific Black Duck Conservation Group.

The Friends of the OBP will be at tomorrow - Saturday 24 October - so why not stop by and say hello, and pick up some Orange-bellied Parrot themed giftware. All proceeds go to support the work we do to monitor and protect these beautiful, critically endangered birds.

See you at the market! 🐾

Do you walk, ride, paddle or explore in Tasmania's Coast to Cradle Wild Country? Here's your chance to have a say and help shape the future of this beautiful and wild area.

Following several weeks of community consultation, including public open days and workshops, everyone with an interest in the area that runs from the beach and coastline at Penguin right through to Cradle Mountain, is invited to contribute to an online survey.

Our own Wildcare Friends of the Penguin Cradle Trail know this region well, actively maintaining and improving the Penguin Cradle Trail, an 80 km walking track first developed in the 1970s. With local knowledge and experiences, their ideas matter. And if you know this area, your thoughts matter too!

Read through this article on our website to find out more about the consultation, and how you can take part in the community survey. It's open until the first week of November, so make it a priority this weekend!

Happy International Wombat Day!

Today we're celebrating these remarkable marsupials, the important role they play in our ecosystems, and the need to protect them for future generations.

International Wombat Day began in 2005, and what better way to mark the occasion than to shine a spotlight on the great work of our Wildcare Cradle Mountain Volunteers!

Our volunteers have been contributing to a long-running wombat monitoring project, collecting valuable data that feeds into a Department of Natural Resources and Environment Tasmania study spanning 40 years of community science!

🐾 Find out what goes into a wombat monitoring survey and how our volunteers are helping build our understanding of these animals: https://wildcaretas.org.au/news/wombat-monitoring
