DRILL

DRILL One of Australia’s leading youth dance companies, DRILL supports young people to create ambitious new works of contemporary dance for their community.

DRILL is Nipaluna/Hobart’s Youth Dance Company, where young people aged 9 to 25 take active roles as the makers of our performance work while promoting our key pillars of access, inclusion and diversity. Based in nipaluna/Hobart, we connect young Tasmanians with inspiring professional and emerging artists through our Junior and Senior Companies and schools-based programs. DRILL empowers the next g

eneration of leaders, thinkers, nurturers, and change-makers with a commitment to collaborative creative processes and peer to peer learning. Our works encourage young people to tell their stories, share their values, and voice their thoughts through performance and physical expression. We bring young people together to form a tight-knit community of peers, fostering a space for self-development and discovery built on trust and supported by kindness. DRILL’s Senior Company (ages 14-25) and Junior Company (ages 9-14) create and perform new work annually and we welcome people with and without dance experience. All DRILL programs have a strong commitment to and focus on the entire wellbeing of the young people involved.

Production Season has started!

Last week we held our first 5-day intensive for 'Deep Dark Tales', coming this September to Theatre Royal. It was a massive week for our crew, listening, sharing and collaborating with our artistic leaders, and we're so proud of the progress they made.

A huge thank you to our creatives Tyrel Dulvarie, Gabe Comerford, Bryony Anderson of Axelbone, and our lovely AD Tara for your time, attention and overall great vibes you brought to our space 🖤

'Deep Dark Tales' is supported by the Tasmanian Government through Arts Tasmania and the City of Hobart through Creative Hobart, with In-Kind support by Theatre Royal and Axelbone.

Come see DRILL at DANCEWEEKENDER!

DANCEWEEKENDER is a vibrant celebration of community dance across Lutruwita/Tasmania, presented by Tasdance, and hosted locally by Theatre Royal, this Saturday, 25 April 2026.

Since its inception in 2024, the momentum has continued, bringing local dance groups together for afternoons of performing, teaching, and sharing. Events across Lutruwita/Tasmania invite social dance groups to perform a short piece and then teach their style to the audience, allowing anyone to join in, whether for ten minutes or three hours.

As part of DANCEWEEKENDER, DRILL will present a short showing created in collaboration with our young people. This piece explores finding connection within your community, what it means to have a voice, make choices, and feel connected to those around us.

Using simple improvisation activities, the dancers are showing in real time how their decisions impact themselves, others, and the wider community and exploring how they can find connection with each other. These small movement ideas are then brought together to form a larger dance, showing how individual actions can build into something meaningful and shared. DRILL will be demonstrating our choreographic process, how these simple dance tasks strung together can create choreography, inviting the audience to participate in a light-hearted playful experience.
