The Hobart Rivulet is flooding! Will the platypus be ok?

The short answer: Yes, it’s "business as usual" for them... mostly!

Platypus take advantage of high water levels to forage freshly flooded verges, often utilizing currents to maximize their foraging efficiency.

Where the torrent becomes impassable, platypus simply leave the water and walk along the banks to bypass the heaviest rapids and access calmer, often temporary backwaters.

However, while evolutionary adaptations prepare platypus for floods, urban infrastructure like concrete walls, culverts, and fencing can block their natural detours. This increases the risk of displacement, injury, or drowning—especially for younger or weaker animals.

Unlike platypus, land-dwelling wildlife such as possums and pademelons face a high risk of drowning when trying to cross flooding waterways.

Ultimately, storms provide an important natural reset for our waterways, making this just another day in the life of the extraordinary platypus.

The Hobart Rivulet Platycams were a response to the preventable loss of Larila to litter entanglement in November 2022.

Since then, we’ve screened over 10,000 videos as part of our 24/7 monitoring of the waterway. This allows for early intervention, enabling us to act fast to reduce injury and keep animals safe in their own home.

Always !

They’re back!😍

The ARC angels have been busy crafting a fresh batch of handmade-in-Hobart puggles!

Did you know that ARC (Animal Rescue Cooperative) provides thousands of meals and support items to animal rescuers every week? Every purchase of these platypus plushies directly supports Tasmania’s ARC Hub, along with our Platycam Project—helping us keep a watchful eye on our local Hobart Rivulet population.

These go fast, so adopt your puggle before they’re gone!

A rare glimpse into the secret world of the platypus! ✨

After months of relying entirely on its mother in a pitch-black burrow, a puggle cautiously ventures out for the first time.

Alone, it heads to the water and immediately begins foraging. With its first mission accomplished, the puggle returns to the familiarity of the nesting burrow.

How's that for animal instinct!

54 trips in 5 days. 🐚🌿

Since a doesn't have a pouch, she has to build one. The nesting burrow is her surrogate pouch — a handcrafted nursery that takes a massive effort to create!

Construction stats for this female: ⏱️ 32 hours of total labor. 🌿 25 hrs hauling material. 🏗️ 7 hrs constructing the nest. 🏊‍♀️ 54 separate trips.

A mother on a mission. Respect!
