Sarah* spent her life working hard, building friendships and contributing to her community. Today, like many seniors, she is living on a pension and facing difficult choices between rent, food, medication and staying connected.
When Sarah could no longer afford to go to social gatherings, she quietly stopped attending. Rather than tell her friends she was struggling, she stayed home alone, determined to maintain her dignity.
Through STAR's Connection Fund, we were able to help Sarah reconnect with her friends and community. The difference has been life-changing.
Sadly, there are many more seniors just like Sarah who are experiencing loneliness and isolation because they simply can't afford the costs of staying connected.

The theme for National Reconciliation Week 2026 is All In, a call for all Australians to commit wholeheartedly to reconciliation every single day. This fits with STAR’s first Reconciliation Plan that commitments to continuing to build friendships with local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, engage in yarning circles and embracing responsibilities under the new Aged Care Act. We recognise that aged care must not only meet clinical needs but also promotes cultural inclusion and equity, especially with seniors whose unique connection to land, family and community deserve recognition and respect. Reconciliation Australia’s vision of a just, equitable and reconciled nation aligns with STAR’s goal of fostering care environments where First Nation’s Elders feel safe, respected and understood.
