Our Genie Room is open for visitors at 9:30 this morning. It is an ideal opportunity to ask questions about building your family tree. The GRAs have a wealth of knowledge and so many resources at their fingertips and are ever so helpful.

Maybe you can start a family project for the upcoming school holidays. Shared history binds us together.

Monday murmerings.

As we head towards the end of the month, our GRAs are working in the Genie Room to help you find out how you can make the most of our resources to discover and uncover your family's history.

So much to learn, so much to uncover, this is a hobby that has become a passion for our members and we hope that you too will discover it.

Pop into our Genie Room at the Cleveland Libary (behind the local history section) anytime between 9:30am until 12:30pm on Tuesday and Thursday or 12:30pm until 3:30pm on Saturday when our GRAs are on duty.

We do have a couple of displays coming up which we will tell you about as they draw near, but for the meantime, our GRAs are there to help you.

Why not pop into our Genie Room today between 12:30pm and 3:30pm whilst our excellent GRAs are on duty and ask them how to start your family history journey of discovery? You don't have to be a member to pop in, visitors are most welcome.

Where is our Genie Room? In the Cleveland Library (Libraries - Redland City Council), adjacent to the Local History section.

Monday Murmerings

Gosh what a great meeting we had last week with a fabulous presentation by Helen Smith. Now we are all digging into our family trees for those alternative sources to help us break down those pesky brick walls in our research.

This week our Genie Room (in the Cleveland Library), will be open to visitors on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 9:30am until 12:30pm and Saturday afternoon from 12:30pm-3:30pm. After last week's meeting, they now have other tools in their research belts to assist you in your family tree research.

One thing that is often asked, is do we charge a fee? Our GRAs offer free advice and assistance, show you what resources to use and how to use them, however a gold coin donation is most appreciated. Members can access the Genie Room and use the resources whenever the Cleveland Library is open as part of their membership benefits.

We will also be involved in an activity in the Cleveland Library "Start your family story, Part one: Tools, records and research" , Saturday, 29 August 2026, 10:30am – 12pm, bookings are free but are required. Check the Redland City Council Library website to book.

Our monthly meetings are held 2nd Wednesday of every month (except January) in the Donald Simpson Community Centre, and are also open to visitors to attend. There is a nominal $2 entry fee to help cover the costs of the venue. Each month we have guest speakers at the meetings or an activity designed to enhance our research. Our members happily share their knowledge and expertise with those who need it, so if you have a question, pop into our Genie Room or attend one of our meetings and see how we can help you build and grow your family tree and learn about your family's history.

We have been here in Cleveland, helping locals, as well as interstate and international visitors since 1981. Why not pop in and find out more about what we do, how we can help you and how you too can start researching your family's history.

What life choices did your ancestors make? Is there an interesting story behind their choices? There is only one way to find out and that is by delving into their lives with research.

Our Genie Room in the Cleveland Library is open tomorrow for anyone interesting in finding out how to find out more about their family history. Our GRAs will be on hand from 12:30pm until 3:30pm. They can help you start the journey of building your family tree and uncovering their story. After all, without them and the choices they made (or were made for them), we would not exist.

Monday Murmerings

Can you believe it is August already? The EKKA has started and the Census forms are being made available. So a busy week already for most of us, but wait there's more. 😉 Our monthly meeting, open to members and visitors is happening on Wednesday at 12:15pm in the Donald Simpson Centre. Our Guest Speaker, Helen Smith, will be talking to us about 'Australian Census Substitutes'. A very timely topic.

As for the GRAs, they will of course be in the Genie Room at the Cleveland Library on their usual days and times: 9:30am-12:30pm Tuesdays and Thursdays and 12:30pm-3:30pm on Saturdays. They absolutely love helping others learn how to research their family tree and family history and helping to break down those pesky brick walls those elusive ancestors have built.

So what are some of the documents that we use in our research? Birth, death and marriage certificates, church records for baptisms, marriages, marriage banns and burials, land tithes, trade journals, old school records, old maps and yes census documents and more. Ask us about how we find them, how we use them.

It really is a fantastic hobby and become such a personal journey for each of us. Who knows what you will find? So many great stories, sad tales, romantic love stories. What will you find?

Did you know about this website?

Late last week, we began migrating the main site back to our own server rather than continuing to use commercial hosting.

Internet speeds have increased significantly since we first moved to commercial hosting, making it much more practical for us to host the site ourselves again. At the same time, hosting costs have increased considerably, and as a not-for-profit organisation, keeping our ongoing expenses down is an important consideration.

The migration is now complete, and we’ll continue to monitor things closely as we bring the site back onto our own infrastructure.
