Have you done a DNA test and confused about the results or what you should do with them? DNA ethnicity can give a general idea of where your family came from, but DNA matches help you find the connections within your family.

This is where good research helps. Our (Not-For-Profit) Society comprises entirely of volunteers who just love to help anyone and everyone who has an interest in their family's origins and past. Our resources stretch all over the world and our Genie Room at the Cleveland Library is where our resources are kept. Be they online or physical (hard copy) subscriptions, magazines, maps, non-fiction books, microfiche, etc, our collective knowledge and skills are well worth tapping into.

Yes, we can do some research for you but we much prefer to help you learn how to embark on the journey of discovery and use the resources available to you. That way, you get the thrill of the new discoveries as you find them and yes, we will still be happy to help you all through that journey whenever you need help or guidance.

So why not pop into our Genie Room and talk to our wonderful GRAs about how to get started or how to find that elusive ancestor that has been bugging you for some time now? The GRAs are on hand Thursday 9:30am until 12:30pm (same times for Tuesdays) and on Saturday afternoon from 12:30pm until 3:30pm.

Monday Murmerings

Last week our Guest Speaker was unfortunately unable to attend, hopefully we can reschedule that presentation for a later date. However, we did have a presentation by Shauna Hicks, Patron of History Queensland, and the topic was 'Finding Lost Women'. What a great presentation! A lot of rough justice metered out to widows and unemployed girls and women in those days. A lot of avenues to help find them also. Thank you Shauna.

As for this week? We have a display at the Alexandra Hills Shopping Centre this week Monday to Friday from 9:00am until 3:00pm. Why not stop by our table and talk to us about what we do and how you too can discover this absolutely absorbing hobby?

Mind you, our GRAs will still continue helping visitors in our Genie Room at the Cleveland Library from 9:30am-12:30pm on Tuesday and Thursday as well as 12:30pm-3:30pm on Saturday.

Yep! Before you know it, you hear the calls of "what's for dinner?" Meanwhile, I'm reading a diary entry from my great-great grandmother about what happened on the day she met my great-great grandfather. Ooooo so romantic.

A good explanation of how siblings show up with a DNA test.

Ever wonder why siblings can look so different, or get such different DNA test results, even with the same two parents?
It comes down to something called recombination. Before an egg or s***m cell forms, each parent's chromosome pairs shuffle and swap pieces at random. That means every child gets a unique mix.
So full siblings typically share only about 50% of their DNA with each other, not 100%. Different combination every time, same parents.

Monday Murmerings

Will you join us at our monthly meeting on Wednesday? We are meeting at the Donald Simpson Community Centre at 12:15pm and our Guest Speaker this month will be Terence Hendricks, President 23 Squadron taking to us about the History of 23 Squadron. Local military history is always a very well received subject.

Come along, visitors are most welcome and you never know your family might have some connections with the activities that 23 Squadron undertook.

As for the Genie Room, it will of course be open to visitors on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 9:30am until 12:30pm as well as Saturday afternoon from 12:30pm until 3:30pm. The GRAs will be there ready to help you in everyway that they can. And believe me, they really are a very knowledgeable group of volunteers.

Not that I'm obsessed or anything! Well, maybe just a little.

Regardless, I have plenty of friends with the same mindset and we so love to help each other and gather great resources for all of us (and visitors) to use. Come and have a look in our Genie Room this afternoon from 12:30pm until 3:30pm when our GRAs are on hand. They love showing off their fantastic resources.

So many ancestors with the same name! Naming traditions can be helpful but also a pain in the proverbial. If every town or village has multiple people with the same name, it can be difficult to work out who is who in the zoo. Maybe it is time to ask our wonderful GRAs for a little guidance and assistance. They do love a puzzle.

Pop in and see them today from 9:30am until 12:30pm in the Genie Room at the Cleveland Library. Sometimes another set of eyes is just what is needed, sometimes a bit more digging. Either way, our GRAs are very good at that.

Now that the school holidays have ended and they return to school tomorrow, you might be wondering what on earth are you going t do with yourself. I know, pop into the Genie Room at the Cleveland Library between 9:30am and 12:30pm and find out how you too can start this fascinating journey back in history and discovering the hidden stories in your family's past.

Can't come on Tuesday? The GRAs are also on hand at the same time on Thursday morning and between 12:30pm and 3:30pm on Saturday afternoon.

Genealogy is more than when and where, but who they were as people, why did they move from their homelands, how did they get here, what did they do for a living, did they have a special talent? Let alone if there are any great love stories or scandals.

So much to uncover and doing it the right way from the beginning is a key ingredient. We can show you how.
