"He’s my family. I can’t pass off my family."

For Matthew, Maverick isn’t just a pet. He’s a lifeline. They slept in a tent, walked kilometres for food, and weathered every storm together.

As winter closes in, people like Matthew are going without so their pets don’t have to. But no one should have to choose between eating and feeding the one they love most.

Your support of our Virtual Pet Food Drive means others like Matthew doesn’t have to make that choice.

We all face pain and hardship, but in our darkest moments, the presence of a pet can be the light. No words, no object, no human gesture really compares.

That’s why, for people facing financial hardship, the thought of surrendering their pet is unbearable. Because when everything else is uncertain, the love of a pet is not.

ā€œI could never give her up. I’d rather go without myself than rehome my dog.ā€

These were the heartfelt words uttered by Maureen when speaking of her beloved Jack Russell, Lissi.

Lissi has been by Maureen’s side since she was only 6 weeks old. And this happy little dog supports Maureen in more ways than she could ever know. Facing chronic health conditions, family pressures, financial hardship and mental health challenges, Maureen suffers from bouts of depression where she can retreat from the world for weeks. But Lissi, her precious girl, is always there.

ā€œIt’s a strange thing. You’d think well, how does a dog help that? Well a dog’s companionship does. She’s been a godsend for me. When I’m having a bad day, I can’t even begin to tell you how much comfort she brings me. Only someone that has had a pet will get it. You don’t have to have a conversation. They're just there and they seem to just pick up on the vibes. My little one is always on me or next to me. Lissi means the world to me. She’s a constant.ā€

Despite living with chronic health conditions, Maureen is supporting four generations of family living in the one household ranging from 2-93 years old – three of whom are neurodivergent.

Maureen’s approach to supporting her family members is marked by patience, empathy, and a deep commitment to fostering their strengths while managing the challenges. And Lissi is right there in the mix. To Maureen’s family, she’s so much more than just a pet.

When asked if she’s had to make sacrifices to look after Lissi, Maurine responded: ā€œYes, absolutely.ā€ Maureen has had to choose between eating or providing food for Lissi, and often puts the wellbeing of her family before her own.

ā€œI’ve gotta feed my dog. I’ve gotta feed the people. I’ve got to weigh up what's crucial and make simplified cut back meals in order to get my dog fed. But good pet food doesn’t come cheaply.ā€

Being able to access the pet food that Pets Of The Homeless supplies to her community support centre has been ā€œan absolute lifesaverā€ for Maureen.

If you have ever known the unconditional love and comfort of a four-legged companion and believe that no person should be separated from their pet this winter, you can make a difference.

Buy any SavourLife dry food at Petstock until the 29th of June and SavourLife will donate a 3kg bag of SavourLife Essentials to community partners like us supporting pet parents doing it tough. Buy a bag. Feed a dog in need.

Total donations capped at $250,000 retail value.

ā€œThank you. It’s really needed, it’s really appreciated, and it means the world.ā€ - Maureen. 🧔

As chilly Winter mornings settle over Melbourne, it’s getting harder to leave the warmth of bed. Now imagine waking up in a tent. No power. No water. No heater. The nearest facilities are over a kilometre away. When it rains, you’re stuck inside the tent all day. No car means walking everywhere - rain, hail or shine.

That was the daily reality for Matthew and his best friend, Maverick. Maverick has always been Matthew’s loyal companion, they've gone through thick and thin together.

When told by others he should give up Maverick because a dog is making his situation harder, Matthew responded: "He’s my family. I can’t pass off my family. He’ll be with me until one of us pass.ā€

When we asked Matthew if he’d ever had to skip meals to feed Maverick, he responded, ā€œI do all the time.ā€

Pet food is expensive. Feeding himself was already a struggle - feeding a big boy like Maverick even more so. Matthew told us that accessing the pet food that Pets Of The Homeless supplies to his local soup kitchen had been a ā€œlifesaver.ā€

This is the devastating reality for so many, that we hear time and time again. That’s why we're running our Virtual Pet Food Drive, and we urgently need your help.

We are aiming to raise 150,000 meals, but our campaign has started more slowly than we'd hoped. This time last year, we had raised almost 45,000 meals. We're currently at just over 30,000. We know everyone is feeling the weight of cost of living pressures, but when everyone gives a little, it really does have a massive impact together.

As the cold sets in, people and their beloved pets like Matthew and Maverick are at real risk of going hungry. By filling your virtual cart today with nutritious pet food, you’ll make an immediate difference, helping us respond quickly to rising demand. Your tax-deductible gift will fund the bulk purchase of essential pet food, which we will distribute through our frontline food relief partners across Victoria.

But we can’t do it without you, and winter won’t wait.

What would you do if you couldn't afford to feed your pets? šŸ’”

Claudia was betrayed by the person she trusted most in the world, forced to start over with nothing.

Right now, as the cold sets in and the cost of living continues to rise, people and pets like Claudia, Jessie and Bella are at real risk of going without. That’s why we’re running our Virtual Pet Food Drive, and we need your help to raise 150,000 pet meals.

Every meal donated helps keep beloved pets with their humans, where they belong.

BUY A BAG. FEED A DOG IN NEED.

Pets are part of the family - but when life takes an unexpected turn, even the basics can become hard to manage. 🄺

Rising living costs can put real pressure on pet parents who are doing their best to keep their dogs healthy, fed and at home. Sometimes, something as simple as food support can make all the difference.

That’s why this June, every SavourLife dry food purchase at Petstock triggers a 3kg SavourLife Essentials donation to community partners like us supporting vulnerable pet parents.

Together, we’re helping keep pets and people together. 🐾🧔

Total donations capped at $250,000 retail value.

Bella and Jessie are Claudia’s whole world. So when she realised she could no longer afford to feed them, it was devastating - because she can’t imagine a life without them. 🄺

This winter, too many families are facing the same heartbreaking reality. That's why we're running our Virtual Pet Food Drive, with a goal of raising 150,000 pet meals for pets in need.

The reality is that demand for our services continues to rise, but our campaign has started more slowly than we'd hoped. We need our community behind us to help change that.

Every meal donated helps keep beloved pets with their humans, where they belong.
