When Melissa first answered a social media call for help from our founder, Yvonne, nearly a decade ago, Pets Of The Homeless was a fraction of the size it is today.
"It has been a privilege to watch POTH grow and extend its reach further into the community," Melissa reflects. "But as we’ve grown, the core of the role has remained exactly the same: developing a strong relationship with our foster carers so we can give the ultimate support to animals, and therefore, to their people."
As a Case Manager, Melissa serves as the vital link and sounding board for foster carers - ensuring they have food, medication, veterinary access, and emotional support as they take crisis pets into their homes. In a program that runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to provide invaluable security to families facing hardship, Melissa notes that "there is no such thing as a typical day."
The beauty of the program lives in the quiet, unheadlined moments of compassion she witnesses firsthand:
"I remember a large Staffy cross who came into care incredibly unsettled and unsure of what was happening," Melissa shares. "Her foster carer completely sacrificed their own comfort - grabbing a pillow and blankets to sleep on the floor right beside her until she felt reassured. Another time, I watched a carer gently whispering to a tiny Chihuahua right before a reunification, telling the dog how much she’d be missed, but knowing how much love she was about to bring back into her human's life.”
For Melissa, keeping people and their pets connected isn't just about animal welfare; it's about preserving family. Whether it is a dog, cat, bird, or lizard, these animals are pillars of stability and hope for people navigating domestic violence, health issues, or housing insecurity.
"The Safe Shelter program provides a safety net," Melissa explains. "It gives people the precious time to concentrate on themselves and work on their situation, completely reassured that their family member is safe, happy, and well cared for. During interim visits, I have seen people moved to tears just seeing how happy and healthy their animals look. It drives them to establish a stable environment because they are so desperate to be reunited."
These last few months have brought immense pressure, and Melissa is the first to admit that case management is not always easy.
"It is tough at times, especially when things don’t go to plan and you have to pivot to Plan B. But on the difficult days, I focus entirely on the animals, their humans, and our foster carers, falling back on the incredible expertise of the wider POTH team."
It is the dedication of volunteers like Melissa - working alongside our carers, couriers, and partner vets - that ensures our community can meet crisis with unconditional kindness.
"The rewarding, positive experiences far outweigh the challenges," Melissa says. "Seeing an animal reunited with their person is a pure delight. The joy of seeing those families put back together simply can’t be surpassed." 🥰
