We are pleased to annouce the DEEPAWALI DHAMAKA 2026 on 7th November at Elevation Church on 83 Pease Street, Manoora.

Deepawali, widely known as Tihar in Nepal and among the Nepali-speaking diaspora, celebrates the triumph of light over darkness, hope over despair, and the enduring values of family, compassion and community.

For the Bhutanese-Nepalese community, however, this celebration carries a deeper meaning. For many families who were forced to leave Bhutan following a period of political unrest and disputes over citizenship, cultural identity and self-determination, the festival represents not only the preservation of our heritage but also our resilience, dignity and hope for a better future. Having rebuilt our lives in Australia, we remain committed to preserving our cultural identity while contributing positively to the country we now call home.

It was a great joy and immensely reassuring experience for the Cairns Bhutanese Community Inc. to participate in the Cairns Indian Festival 2026, with the important purpose of raising funds to support the victims of the devastating floods in Nepal. The catastrophic floods have claimed the lives of 1,388 people, left thousands missing, and caused widespread destruction to homes, infrastructure and livelihoods. We can feel the damage caused by such natural calamities as mover three decades ago we were swept by the waves of similar circumstances.

The Cairns Bhutanese Community Inc. extends its deepest gratitude to the Cairns for generously supporting us with their food truck and to Cairns and Region Multicultural Association Inc - CARMA (CARMA) for securing the stall registration with the organisers and the food licence with Cairns Regional Council. We are especially grateful to CARMA President Ms for her invaluable onsite support throughout the day.

While the final accounts are still being calculated, we are delighted to announce that we have raised more than $1,100, which will be donated to the Nepal Prime Minister’s Disaster Relief Fund. We had already pledged a contribution of $1,100, symbolically matching the approximate population of our Bhutanese community in Cairns. All funds raised will be transferred to Nepal PM Disaster Relief Fund in one transation shortly.

We extend our sincere appreciation to our Vice President, Ms Sumitra Gautam, for her leadership and tireless efforts in managing the food stall. Our heartfelt thanks also go to the entire volunteer crew Mahesh Upadhyay, Gopal Ghimire, , and for their dedication and hard work throughout the day.

We also thank everyone who came along, purchased and enjoyed our food, and supported this humanitarian cause. Every purchase was a contribution towards helping families affected by this devastating disaster.

The was yet another historic celebration of colour, culture, unity and the true essence of multiculturalism. It demonstrated once again how diverse communities can come together not only to celebrate but also to stand in solidarity with people facing hardship.

Kudos to GOPIO Cairns Inc. for organising such a magnificent event on an impressive scale. A special shoutout to the dynamic leader Subash Chetry, and the entire board for bringing the community together and making this wonderful celebration possible. The fesstival presented a true replica of incredible India in the beautiful tropics of Cairns!

The Cairns Bhutanese Community Inc. stood alongside the Nepalese community in Cairns, together with other multicultural communities, at a candlelight vigil held in honour and remembrance of those who lost their lives in the recent catastrophe in Nepal.

The evening began with a Welcome to Country by Uncle Peter Hyde, followed by prayers offered by Hindu, Buddhist and Christian faith leaders bringing our different traditions together in a shared moment of grief, compassion and hope.

Community leaders representing the North Queensland Nepalese Community Inc., Cairns and Region Multicultural Association, GOPIO and Cairns Bhutanese Community Inc. stood united in solidarity, extending our deepest condolences, prayers and support to the people of Nepal and the Nepalese diaspora.

Cairns Mayor Amy Eden, Member for Cairns Michael Healy MP, and Member for Mulgrave Terry James MP also stood alongside the community, expressing their deeply heartfelt condolences, sympathy, support and solidarity with the Nepalese community of Cairns.

As a community that was once swept away from our homes by the waves of circumstances, we deeply understand the pain of losing home, safety and loved ones. Our shared experience of displacement reminds us that compassion knows no borders.

With approximately 1,100 members, the Cairns Bhutanese Community Inc. has announced a $1,100 contribution to the Nepal Prime Minister’s Disaster Relief Fund which accounts $1 for every member of our community as a small expression of our solidarity and care.

If any individuals would like to contribute additionally, we warmly welcome the gesture.

Our thoughts and prayers are also with all those still missing, including the 41 fellow Australians, with the heartfelt hope that they will be located safely and reunited with their families.

In times of tragedy, we may come from different places, speak different languages and follow different faiths but our humanity brings us together.

Our hearts and prayers are with Nepal and all those affected.

May those who lost their lives rest in peace. May those missing be found safely. May the injured and affected find strength, comfort and hope.
