La Storia Chapter 5

Vittorio Bertoncini & Gina Contarino

Vittorio Bertoncini from Lucca / Gina Contarino from Southern Italy

Vittorio “Vic” was born on 3 March 1937 in Italy. He only attended school until fifth grade, leaving his education behind because he needed to work and help support his family.

At 20 years of age, Vic received a postcard from his brother Aldo telling him there was plenty of work in Australia. With courage and determination, Vic travelled by boat to Australia carrying little more than a suitcase, a bunch of bananas and £20 — money that was unfortunately stolen from him soon after his arrival.

Vic travelled to Brisbane to meet his brother before making his way north to Mossman. He stayed with the Fapani family, who sponsored him to remain in Australia. Vic began cutting cane by hand and lived in the cane barracks.

Always looking for an opportunity to build a better future, Vic saved his money and bought a second-hand truck. He began hauling cane for local farmers before eventually purchasing a larger truck. He later worked for Main Roads, travelling throughout North Queensland, including Normanton, Cooktown and Mossman.

Every day, Vic would visit Contarinos, a local milk bar, where he bought his box of matches and his favourite strawberry milkshake. It was there that he met Gina, the beautiful young woman who would become his wife.

Vic and Gina married in 1963. Their families initially disapproved of the relationship because Vic came from northern Italy while Gina’s family were from the south. Determined to be together, Vic and Gina eloped.

Together, they built an extraordinary life. They purchased and operated taxis for 32 years, while Vic also served three terms on the local council — 15 years in total — becoming the first immigrant to serve as a councillor.

Vic operated the mail run between Cairns and Mossman for six years and established a small-engine mechanic and mower business, servicing communities across Cooktown, Weipa, Cairns and Mossman.

Vic and Gina later took over Gina’s family business, Contarinos. Vic also established a local bus company, which he eventually sold to his brother, although he continued driving buses for many years.

Throughout his life, Vic faced many challenges. Since 2017, he has battled throat cancer and prostate cancer and suffered a fractured pelvis. Yet, true to his character, he kept going.

Vic worked hard his entire life, but he is the first to say that he could not have achieved it without his beautiful wife, Gina, by his side.

His words of wisdom are simple but powerful:

“Your future is created by what you do today.”

Vic has made a lasting contribution to Mossman — as a businessman, councillor, family man and proud Italian Australian. One of his proudest moments came in 2000, when he was selected as a torch runner for the Sydney Olympic Games in recognition of his contribution to the community.

Together, Vic and Gina are proud parents of three children, nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren — a family legacy that continues to grow.

From arriving in Australia with a suitcase, a bunch of bananas and £20, Vic built a life defined by hard work, courage, family and community.

His story is the story of an Italian migrant who helped build the North Queensland community he came to call home.

La storia chapter 4
John Bomben
from Pordenone, Friuli, Italy

John Bomben was born on 7 September 1941 in Pordenone, a city in Friuli, Italy. After finishing school, he completed a trade and trained in cabinetry and joinery.

There was not much work available at the time, so John and six friends decided to look overseas for a better future. They applied to several countries, and Australia accepted their application first. On 6 April 1961, they sailed from Trieste aboard the Flaminia, arriving in Melbourne five weeks later.

From Melbourne, they were taken to the migrant camp at Bonegilla, where migrants stayed until employment became available.

John soon became tired of waiting for work at the camp. The seven friends eventually went their separate ways, and John travelled by train to Queensland, eventually making his way to North Queensland, where there was plenty of seasonal work.

He worked cutting sugar cane and, when the cane season finished, he did not have to travel far to find other work. He picked to***co and fruit and also worked on construction sites.

Times were hard. John worked from before dawn until after dark, and his hands were constantly covered in blisters. At the camps where the workers slept, there was no water for washing, no sanitary services and no electricity.

John travelled back to Victoria and New South Wales several times to visit his friends. During one of these trips, he met an Australian girl, Lyn Dunn, in Lismore. They married in 1967 and had one son, Luigi David.

John and Lyn settled in Cairns, where John obtained his builders’ licence. Over the years, he became a successful builder in the Cairns area and built the family home in Whitfield, where the family lived for many years.

John was also heavily involved in soccer and was a founding member of the Leichhardt Soccer Club.

For decades, John dedicated his time to helping thousands of soccer players develop their skills and fulfil their potential. The club grew to around 280 players, including men, women and juniors. John always held a position on the committee, and even today, he and Lyn continue to support the club.

Both John and Lyn are Life Members of the Leichhardt Soccer Club. John is also a Life Member of the Cairns and District Soccer Association, the Far North Queensland Soccer Federation and the Queensland Soccer Council.

In 2000, John’s contribution to sport was recognised at the highest level when Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II awarded him the Australian Sports Medal.

From a young migrant arriving in Australia with little more than the determination to build a better life, John went on to build not only homes, but also a lasting legacy through his family, his community and generations of soccer players he helped along the way.

La Storia Chapter 3

Antonio & Rosa Ambrosino
Both from Bacoli, Naples, Italy

Tobia Ambrosino was born on 28 June 1937.

He was rewarded with a free ticket to Australia by the Italian Government in recognition of his service in the Italian Army. He arrived in Far North Queensland in 1956 and was astounded by the vast tracts of land, which he saw as perfect for growing fruit and vegetables — something his family had always done in Italy.

Five years later, his brother Antonio (Tony) came to visit. He too was impressed by Australia and saw the many opportunities it offered, so he decided to stay.

Tony’s first farm was in Ingham, followed by a second farm in Innisfail, before he eventually settled in Dimbulah, where he grew to***co and sugar cane. He also kept horses and cattle.

Tony met his wife, Rosa, during a visit back to Italy, and they married in 1972. They had two children, both born in Mareeba: Salvatore, born in 1973, and Lucia, born in 1976.

The family loved life on the farm, and the children thrived in the outdoors, enjoying the freedom of growing up surrounded by animals, farmland and nature.

In 1977, Tony and his family moved back to Italy to care for their elderly parents and grandparents. Tony and Rosa started a restaurant and deli, using produce and supplies they grew themselves. They later had another child, Carmela, who was born in Italy.

When the children were adults, Lucia remained in Italy, while Salvatore moved back to Australia in 2005, followed by Carmela in 2015.

Salvatore was 28 years old when he settled in Cairns. Having grown up surrounded by food and the hospitality industry, he opened Tony’s Pizza, making pizzas in a traditional wood-fired oven. Salvatore and his partner, Ina, whom he met in Cairns in 2006, established a successful business and built a good life in the region.

Their three children, Anthony, Sophie and Eliana, were all born in Cairns.

Salvatore continues to teach his children about their Italian culture and heritage, and tells them the stories of how their grandfather and great-uncle came to Australia when they were young.

Salvatore grew up hearing his father’s stories of Australia — of a better life and greater opportunities. Those stories stayed with him and ultimately inspired him to return to Australia himself.

Today, Salvatore is forever grateful to his father and his uncle for the journey they began, and for the opportunities they created for the generations that followed.

La Storia Chapter 2

Rodolfo & Anna Avolio
Both from Fagnano Castello, Provincia Cosenza, Calabria, Italy.

Rodolfo Avolio was born on the 15th of January 1928, to Pasquale Avolio and Assunta Bianca.
He was a person who faced life with skill and courage and never gave up. At the age of 13 he began work in the mountains of Fagnano Castello as a lumberjack and as he got older, he worked in Corsica and France, making railway sleepers for the railroads, always working hard to support his family. At the age of 28 he was sponsored by a relative, Armando Bellomusto, to work in Australia.

He arrived on the ship ‘Surriento’, which docked in Fremantle, then made his way to Mareeba. Rodolfo initially worked as a cane cutter and on the irrigation project at Tinaroo Dam. He then worked in the to***co industry for the Bellomusto family in Dimbulah where he felt at home with relatives who looked out for him. After 7 years on the Bellomusto farm Rodolfo became a share farmer himself, growing to***co at Emerald Creek with Natale and Concetta Tobiano. Rodolfo then sponsored three of his brothers Elio, Aldo and Pompeo to come to Australia; he was happy to be surrounded by his siblings.

At the age of 35, Rodolfo married Anna Caruso, also from Fagnano, by proxy, after exchanging photographs. Anna left her village and travelled to Australia by plane to meet her husband for the first time, arriving on the 8th of June 1963. To this day many recall the story of Anna disembarking the plane with looks and beauty to rival Sophia Loren. They made a home on the Tobiano farm and worked tirelessly to save enough money to buy their own farm. During this time, they had three children: Pompea, Pasquale and Antonella, but tragically their son died shortly after being born.

In 1968 Rodolfo and Anna bought a to***co farm on Studt Road, Mareeba. Rodolfo and Anna worked hard for many years and were very proud of their achievements. They grew to***co until 1982, when Rodolfo partially retired and started a market garden, growing and selling capsicum and tomatoes locally. Rodolfo’s father came to Australia in 1971 and the couple were proud to be able to show him their achievements. Rodolfo lived to 91 years of age, passing away on the 8th December 2019.

Rodolfo and Anna have two daughters, four grandchildren and three great grandchildren who will carry on their legacy.

La Storia Chapter 1
Renato & Anna Avolio
From Fagnano Castello, Calabria, Italy

Renato Avolio was born on 8 August 1939 in Fagnano Castello, Calabria, Italy. He was one of eight children, born at a time when life was not easy. Like many families in post-war Calabria, Renato grew up with very little, but with strong family values, resilience and a determination to make something of his life.

Anna Pompea De Rose was born in the same village on 2 February 1947. She was one of seven children and, like Renato, grew up surrounded by family and the close-knit community of Fagnano Castello.

In 1960, Renato made the brave decision to migrate to Australia, sponsored by his sister. Like so many Italians of his generation, he travelled by ship, leaving behind his family, friends and the village he knew, in search of a better future. Australia offered the promise of opportunity, hard work and the chance to build a secure life.

Five years later, in 1965, Anna followed, sponsored by her sister Maria. Her journey was different, travelling by plane to begin a new chapter in a country that was still completely unfamiliar to her. Coming from a large family, Anna’s father faced the difficult reality that he could not provide the opportunities he wanted for all his children. For Anna, Australia offered the chance to build a future of her own.

Although Renato and Anna came from the same small village in Calabria, their paths did not truly cross until they both arrived in Mareeba. There, thousands of kilometres from Fagnano Castello, they met and began their life together. They were married on 12 June 1966.

Together, Renato and Anna embraced the hard work that came with starting a new life in Australia. They worked tirelessly on to***co farms, saving and building towards a future for themselves and, eventually, their family.

In 1971, their hard work paid off when they purchased their own farm at Tabacum. After 15 successful years, they took another big step and purchased a larger property at Paddy’s Green, where they continued growing to***co until the Australian Government to***co industry buyout in 2004.

Always willing to adapt and work hard, Renato and Anna then turned their attention to other crops, growing mangoes, avocados and lychees. Their connection to the land remained an important part of their lives.

Together they raised four children — Patrizia, Laura, Angela and Marcello — and watched their family grow to include ten much-loved grandchildren, who became, and continue to be, a great source of pride and joy.

Sadly, Anna recently passed away, surrounded by the love of her family and close friends.

While her journey has come to an end, the life she built will continue through the people she loved most. Her strength, warmth, sacrifices and devotion to her family will be remembered by her children, grandchildren, family and friends.

From a small village in Calabria to a new life in Far North Queensland, Anna’s story is one of courage, love and family. It is a story shared by so many Italian migrants who left everything familiar behind, worked hard, and built a future for the generations that followed.

Anna may have left Fagnano Castello many years ago, but she never left behind the values, traditions and love for family that she carried with her. Her memory will live on in the family she built and in the hearts of everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.
