Our director, Dr Lara Wieland, works alongside our partner .ukraine’s Mobile Care teams, joining clinic visits, providing training on topics chosen by local doctors, and taking part in discussions about patient care.⁠

“My Ukrainian colleagues understand their healthcare system. My role is to observe, listen and learn. The more I learn from them, the more useful I can be,” Lara says.⁠

Their shared goal is to provide more consistent, long-term care for communities where distance, shelling and damaged medical infrastructure make seeing a doctor increasingly difficult.⁠

Beautiful surprise from Aussie volunteer Helena Chlepnac who heard of Ron’s love for Vegemite ( and craving for it in Ukraine)- and sent him a big jar, a great book and some beautiful Aussie t-shirts that we will use as gifts in training Ukrainians. Little touches that make you feel cared for.

At a recent mobile clinic in Korosten, many of the patients had lost a family member in the war. They came through local groups that bring together people grieving loved ones and provide a place for connection and support.⁠
⁠
Alongside medical and dental care, patients were given time to talk, feel heard and receive support without judgement. By the end of the day, some who had arrived carrying immense grief left smiling.⁠

Two and a half weeks. One clinic day in Kyiv that was really about building a future mobile team. A dinner where our hosts spoke of exhaustion and shame they shouldn’t have to carry. A cardiologist who told us, through tears, that Ukraine sometimes feels forgotten — and that our visit told her otherwise.

We had an ultrasound training day planned in Kyiv until bridges started getting hit and intelligence predicted a serious missile attack for our exact time slot.

So we cancelled — and ran it from our own house in Lviv instead. Every one of our mobile clinic teams went home with a donated handheld ultrasound, and our training manager went home with an Aussie oilskin hat (don’t ask, he earned it).

Behind the logistics were harder stories: a doctor couple who could no longer leave their kids with their only safe option because her village is now under drone threat; a colleague whose husband was killed on the front the day before she was due to join us.

Translation from our partner: “How does the experience of an Australian doctor integrate into the realities of mobile clinics in Kharkiv region? Thanks to many years of work in remote areas of Australia, Lara Wieland has experience in providing medical care where access to doctors is limited. In Ukraine, it cooperates with teams of mobile clinics operating in the difficult conditions of frontline communities. In the Kharkiv region, the way to the doctor is complicated not only by distances, but also by shelling and damaged medical infrastructure. "My Ukrainian colleagues are well aware of their health care system, but I need to watch, listen and study its challenges. The more I learn from them, the more useful I can be for them," says Lara Wieland. Lara joins mobile trips as a doctor, conducts training on topics chosen by the team, and participates in meetings where doctors analyze their work and look for ways to ensure continuity of assistance in war. To this end, the team of the Kharkiv region deliberately narrows the geography of mobile trips: “Their decision to return to the same settlements helps to make medical care more systematic,” Lara says. We improve our work by relying on various sources, not just my suggestions. We can discuss clinical cases together and learn from each other. Speaking about plans for the future, LARA notes: “Ukrainian colleagues are constantly working with these communities and will stay close to patients. Therefore, our cooperation should be based on respect for their experience and strengthening their abilities. I am inspired by these doctors - they They serve people and show love to them, even when it is extremely difficult for them.”
