The right of Indigenous people to build a real economy is at the centre of our work. They saw it tearing away at the hope of the young people.

Cape York Employment works throughout Cape York to create pathways to meaningful employment by working with local job seekers to identify job opportunities, provide access to training, improve job-readiness and address barriers to employment. Ending Passivity

When the old people of Cape York gathered in the early 1990s, inspiring the Cape York Agenda, they declared passive welfare as a scourge ripping apart their communities. They could not stand by and watch their people retreat to the evils of addiction in response to the despair of passivity. With that thinking, they knew that a job was the best way to provide hope and turn round the dysfunction spreading across their communities. Our challenge is to move people from welfare dependence to an economically viable future. We do this by identifying job opportunities, building work capabilities and social norms that support a strong work ethic, and engaging potential employers. As the region is underdeveloped, the number of job seekers in Aurukun and Coen far outstrips the number of jobs available locally. Wherever possible, job seekers in Aurukun and Coen are assisted to plan to get one of the limited number of the local jobs available, get on a realistic training pathway to a local or regional job, or consider taking up work opportunities elsewhere.

𝗔 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲, 𝗮 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝘆𝗮𝗿𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿! 🚗

Sometimes, staying connected means going the extra mile!

Our Cape York Employment Coen team recently hit the road to Port Stewart, travelling around 91 kilometres along an unsealed road to catch up with participants living outside of Coen.

It’s a big trip, but an important part of the work we do!

Getting out on the road gives our team the chance to connect with participants face to face, have a good yarn, hear how things are going and provide support as they work towards their employment goals.

For us, it’s about more than just the distance travelled. It’s about building strong relationships, staying connected and making sure participants can continue to access support, no matter where they live.

This week, Cape York Employment proudly supported the Indigenous Driver Licensing Unit during its visit to Lockhart River, helping create pathways to greater independence and employment opportunities for local jobseekers.

For many jobseekers, obtaining a driver's licence is an essential step towards securing meaningful employment. From accessing more job opportunities to travelling to work and training, having a licence can make a real difference.

But the benefits go beyond employment. A driver's licence also builds confidence, supports independence and helps people manage everyday responsibilities, attend appointments and support their families.

Outreach programs like this are essential for our remote communities. They bring practical support closer to home, remove barriers to employment, and empower people to take the next steps toward their goals.👏

That's why we're proud to support CORES Queensland in bringing FREE Su***de Intervention Training to Lockhart River.

This important training will give community members practical skills to recognise the warning signs of su***de, respond to someone who may be at risk and help connect them with appropriate support.

By supporting opportunities like this, we're helping to strengthen local knowledge and capability, ensuring community members have more tools to look after themselves and one another.

Because building stronger communities means investing in people, their wellbeing and their ability to support positive change.

We are pleased to announce that Justin has commenced employment as the Yard Crew Supervisor in Coen with Cape York Employment, under the Community Projects Initiative.

The Community Projects Initiative is an initiative of the National Indigenous Australians Agency (NIAA), supporting opportunities for local employment and skills development.

Justin is a proud local Coen man with strong connections to the Wik Mungkan people and community.

Justin says he is excited about the opportunity to work, which will provide financial support for himself and his family while helping him take an important step towards achieving full-time employment.

We're proud to support local employment opportunities and see our community members building skills, experience and pathways to a brighter future.

Last week, the Queensland Blue Card team spent three days in Lockhart River, with a fantastic turnout of locals keen to take this important step towards their employment goals. 👏

A Blue Card is an important requirement for many jobs involving children, including roles in education, childcare, sport and community services.

For local jobseekers, a Blue Card can help:

✅ Open up employment pathways across a wider range of industries and community services.
✅ Build job readiness by meeting an important requirement for certain roles.
✅ Create opportunities to work locally and contribute to services supporting children, young people and families.

With support from our Cape York Employment team, Keiran worked through the steps needed to reach this goal. While that support helped along the way, Keiran’s own commitment, effort and follow-through were key to getting his licence.

We’re excited to welcome Tracey to the Cape York Employment team. She’ll be on the ground in Lockhart River from Tuesday 6 October, working alongside Chris and the community to support local people on their employment pathways.

Tracey is a proud Aboriginal Koori woman with connections to the Ngarrindjeri and Kriol people. She brings valuable experience working in remote Aboriginal communities across the Northern Territory, including as a Senior Employment Consultant in Ramingining, East Arnhem and as a Site Manager in Milikapiti on the Tiwi Islands.

For Tracey, building strong relationships starts with listening, learning and respecting the local community and culture.
