One of the key pillars of The Harrison Payne Initiative is to influence change and ensure other families don’t experience what we have since Harry was taken from us. This week we had the opportunity to sit in parliament and be part of significant change that is happening in Queensland. We fully support the changes and believe we have played a small role in influencing change. This is not about politics it’s about making Queensland safer and ensuring victims are the priority. How can it be that victim impact statements are ‘vetted’ by the DPP before they are read out by the victim in the courtroom. This very thing happened to us when the dangerous driver was sentenced.

Change is required and we now have a government that is listening and implementing change. This makes our hearts feel a little bit brighter and we know deep down that these changes will help families in the future.

Today we were at Queensland Parliament as important new parole laws were introduced - Nation-leading reforms that put victims, their families and the safety of our community where they belong: at the forefront.
For far too long, we have seen victims and their families left carrying a life sentence of their own, while the system can seem more focused on the rights of the offender.
That needs to change.
If you commit a serious, violent or heinous offence, then the consequences need to reflect the seriousness of that crime. There has to be accountability. There has to be protection for the community. And above all, there has to be a system that remembers the victims.
Through The Harrison Payne Initiative, we speak with families whose lives have been completely changed because of the actions of another person. We know that no law can undo what has happened or bring someone home. But strong laws can make sure victims are heard, offenders are properly held to account, and our community is better protected.
These reforms are nation-leading, and Queensland should be proud to lead the way.
We will always stand for victims of crime. We will always stand for stronger accountability. And we will always believe that when someone commits a serious offence, it should be dealt with with the full force and seriousness it deserves.
Victims should never feel like they come second in our justice system.
Today was an important step forward. ❤️

Today is an important day for victims of crime and the families who live with the consequences of someone else’s actions for the rest of their lives.
New parole laws are being introduced into Queensland Parliament today that would significantly strengthen the way parole decisions are made- putting community safety and the voices of victims at the forefront.
The proposed changes would expand Queensland’s restricted-prisoner laws to all prisoners serving life sentences, allowing the Parole Board to prevent a prisoner from being considered for parole for periods of up to 10 years, with further declarations possible. They would also strengthen victims’ involvement in the parole process and make community safety the paramount consideration in parole decisions.
For us, this is bigger than politics.
We know what it is like to have your entire life changed in a moment. We know what it is like to navigate a justice system while grieving someone you love more than words could ever explain.
Victims don’t get parole from their sentence. Families don’t get released from their grief. Our life sentence began the day Harry never came home.
That is why Kent and Kylie will continue to stand up, speak up and advocate for laws that recognise victims, protect our community and ensure serious offending has serious consequences.
Today we stood outside Parliament House not only as Harry’s Mum and Dad, but as advocates for every family who has had to find a voice when theirs was almost taken from them.
This is an important step forward.
Victims deserve to be heard. Families deserve to be considered and community safety must come first.
For Harry. Always. 💙

Harry’s legacy now, later and forever. We had a dream and so many people helped our dream become a reality. Five years of supporting families, saving lives and sharing Harry’s story. Something we never thought we would need to do. We will continue to advocate for change, drive change in relation to safe driving and ensure dangerous drivers are held to account for their actions. Thank you everyone for your amazing support ❤️

We have no words for this behaviour. The reason Harry lost his life is because of a dangerous driver and we continue to see disgraceful driving on our beaches. This is the reason we are calling for Harry’s Law, it won’t stop this type of driving completely however it will ensure that idiots like this will not be allowed on our beaches.

Five years two months and 16 days 😔

Time does not heal the pain however your story continues to help others, save lives and through your foundation we push for change. Think about Harry when you are behind the wheel, own your actions, think of the life long consequences of your driving behaviour.

Harry was just 18 when he was killed in a preventable crash because of a dangerous drivers actions.

We love you mate and miss you everyday, your legacy will continue to inspire change and save lives ❤️
