Deception Bay is a stunning part of Moreton Bay. No need to tell hundreds of Black Swans who have made a home amongst the seagrass beds. It's worth a trip down to the Bay and check them out!

On Friday, we hosted four classes of students and teachers from Deception Bay North State School at the “hub.” The learning activities featured topics such as mangrove adaptations, local shorebirds, marine turtles, and microscopy. We were truly impressed by our visitors' knowledge and enthusiasm. Special thanks to our expert volunteers, Rick Webb, Susie Bedford, and Rebecca Frith for collaborating and supporting the teachers. This marked the hub’s first visit by primary school students, building on the successful efforts from the World Science Festival held in March 2026.

Today Hannah Sherlock and Lachlan Storie from Healthy Land & Water visited Nathan Road Wetlands to scope the on-ground restoration works planned for this season. This site visit forms part of a shorebird habitat restoration & research program, which will deliver targeted saltmarsh habitat improvement through priority w**d management and follow up site care to support migratory shorebirds. This great initiative is funded by Brisbane Airport through their Containers for Change program, enabling Healthy Land & Water to work alongside local delivery partners, including the Redcliffe Environmental Forum and the City of Moreton Bay Council to achieve practical outcomes for shorebird habitat in Moreton Bay.

The Nathan Road Wetlands are being well looked after by our Bushcare volunteers. On Tuesday, they focused on reemerging ground w**ds to make sure they don't impact on this amazing restoration area. A birding hotspot, it's 13 hectares of valuable wetlands.

A big thank you for the informative presentations on Thursday night provided by Sam Gallagher-Becker (University of Queensland) and Dr Iris Tsoi from Healthy Land and Water. Some great questions from the audience certainly added to the evening. Two diverse but local presentations including water dragons and the monitoring of the health of our southeast Queensland catchments.

Some great work carried out by the Chelsea Street Bushcare group. Gary Brennan reports: 15 keen volunteers arrived at the Chelsea Street site to enjoy this amazing Council Bush Reserve. We were happy to welcome a new member, Ash, a student volunteer.
Our first task was to be on our hands and knees to remove the last of the Inch W**d. After an hour, we moved onto the end of ZONE 2 to check out the Heritage Listed SCAR TREE. A cuppa, a chat and a slice of FRAN'S delicious Date & Walnut loaf capped off a productive morning.

Just a couple of the birds that benefitted from the working bee last Sunday. Preventing Broad-leafed pepper from taking over our wetlands at Hays Inlet is really important for biodiversity!

Broad-leafed Pepper can devastate our local wetland areas and its removal is problematic. Chris Joyce (City of Moreton Bay Council) supervised our volunteers at the working bee to ensure the removal of 1000's of these w**ds. Easy enough to remove when they are small, they require special treatment to remove once they get established. The red berries are especially loved by some birds so it's important to remove them from the site to stop more saplings appearing!
