📣 Calling our young people!

Mount Barker District Council is opening nominations for its very first Youth Advisory Committee — and we'd love to see Brukunga (or surrounds) represented.

If you're aged 12–25 and you live, work, study or just feel connected to our district, this is your chance to have a real say in the decisions that shape our community. No previous leadership, committee or volunteering experience needed — just good ideas and a willingness to speak up for the people around you.

Brukunga is a small community with a big heart, and our younger residents see things the rest of us miss. If that sounds like you — or someone you know — please consider putting your hand up.

A VOICE FOR YOUNG PEOPLE AT A LOCAL LEVEL 🗣️

Nominations are now open for Mount Barker District Council’s new Youth Advisory Committee.

Young people aged 12 to 25 who live, work, study or have a strong connection with Mount Barker district are eligible for the committee.

If you know a young person who can be a voice for their community, has great ideas and can make recommendations to Council, please encourage them to apply and make history.

Nominations close Monday 28 September and no previous leadership, committee or volunteering experience is required.

The Mount Barker Youth Advisory Committee will meet for the first time on Thursday 8 October.

Meet Katrina: Greenie + Native Plant Whisperer 🧡
Comes with: a native seedling, a trusty trowel, well-worn gloves, a watering can, a bag of soil, and the practical field gear she's most comfortable in when she's out there getting her hands dirty.

Katrina is our resident environmental brain. With over 20 years working in land management across the Adelaide Hills, she's the person who looks at a bare verge or a tired corner of town and sees what it could become.
She's a big-picture thinker who happens to love getting her hands dirty, and Brukunga is greener for it.

She's also one of the reasons the BCA exists at all. After the fire, Katrina and Kelly, (sometimes known as K1 and K2), joined forces and got this whole thing started.

Katrina's also the one behind the Grow Cart you'll find at the Hall. When she's not making Brukunga better, she's a busy soccer and netball mum, and she knows exactly where to find the best bakeries and hot chocs in the Hills.

That's Katrina's why. Everyone here has one.

Meet Kelly: Treasurer + Chief (Unruly) Labrador Wrangler 🧡
Comes with: a trusty laptop, a well-worn calculator, a Watts Reserve brick, mud-ready boots, one very cute but unruly black Labrador, and a coffee that's always going cold.

Here's Kelly's why:
“After the Cudlee Creek bushfire, it was clear Brukunga had no single voice to help our town be seen and heard in its recovery. So a few of us decided to change that. The BCA became that voice.”

Kelly runs her own business (product development, websites, marketing, numbers, and helping mums and families along the way), and simply wanted to put those skills to work for the town she loves.

But here's the thing: everyone on this committee brings something different, and none of it has to be a business or a fancy skill set. Some love a working bee. Some are brilliant bakers. Some know everyone in town. Some make a mean cup of tea and show up with a good attitude.
All of it matters. It's what makes Brukunga, Brukunga.

That's Kelly's why. Everyone here has one.

🔥 LET’S GET BEHIND OUR TWO LOCAL Brukunga Country Fire Service LADS! 🚒

Two of our own, Cooper Robertson and Marc Russell, are taking on the huge 2026 Melbourne Firefighter Stair Climb on Saturday 12 September.

They’ll climb 28 floors wearing 25kg of firefighting gear — an incredible physical challenge for an even more important cause, helping raise funds to fight cancer, depression and su***de. 💙

We’d love our Brukunga community to get behind them and help them reach their fundraising goals.

Meet Mike: Our Vice-Chair, and quite possibly the only person in Brukunga who owns more Lycra than regular clothes. 🧡

Mike and his family are relative newcomers who fell hard for this place, and he reckons the town would be even better if we were all on bikes. When he's not flying down our roads in head-to-toe Lycra, he's working in health, breeding Belted Galloway cattle, tending his very British box hedges, and enjoying a good red (or three).

He also, somehow, finds time to help run this community association.
That's the thing about the committee. It's not people with spare time on their hands. It's ordinary locals who care enough to help even though they're already busy!

Meet Heidi: Chairperson + Hurricane 🧡
Comes with: a stack of grant papers, a phone that never stops, a shiny new Justice of the Peace stamp, a bottle of Sauv Blanc, two gorgeous golden retrievers, her Ariat cowgirl boots, and a country music soundtrack.

Meet Heidi, our Chairperson, though half the town knows her better as “Hurricane Heidi”, a name she happily owns.
If there's a grant to write, a letter to draft, or a Mayor, MP or councillor to call, Heidi's already on it. She's spent her time building relationships across Council, government and the community and turning them into real support and funding for Brukunga.

When she's not advocating for the town, she's a brand new Justice of the Peace, a devoted golden retriever mum, a country music tragic (she wore her cowgirl boots to Government House), and never far from her “Brukunga, where the hell's that?” t-shirt.

That's the chair's job at its best: bringing people together and getting things moving. And as she'd say herself, none of it happens alone.
It takes a whole committee, volunteers, sponsors and a community that pulls together.

Our AGM is coming up, and it matters. 🧡

Over the past year the BCA has kept real work happening in Brukunga: grants applied for and won, the Watts Reserve taking shape, events run and our town's voice carried to Council and beyond.
None of it happens on its own. It happens because a handful of locals turn up and get it done.

At the AGM, all committee positions are declared vacant and a new committee is elected at the first meeting following it for 2026 to 2027.
That means this is your moment to step in. We'd love some fresh energy and new hands to help keep Brukunga strong.

We're especially looking for people who can bring:
📋 Organisational skills & people comfortable with correspondence, meetings and keeping things ticking.
🔢 A hand with the numbers, to work alongside our Xero system and help guide sound financial decisions.
✍️ Grant writing or funding know-how, to keep bringing money into the town.
📱 Social media, communications skills & marketing skills to help tell Brukunga's story.
🤝 And community-minded people generally, who just want a say in where our town is heading.

You don't need experience or a lot of spare time.
You need to care about this place and be willing to be in the room. That's it.
The rest we figure out together, and it's a genuinely good feeling to be part of a team that gets things done.

Here's where to grab one:

✅ And later this week, we'll be doing a drop-around town, so keep an eye out for one on your front doorstep or tucked under your doormat
