๐ณ๐ BERWICK SPRINGS LAKE ๐๐ณ
๐๐ OUR STATEMENT OF PURPOSE ๐๐
One of our Sunday walkers asked a simple question: do we have a statement of purpose?
We did not. So we wrote one.
It was written by a group of us who help organise and take part in the Sunday walks, the competitions and Berwick Springs Lake Day. We are an independent group of residents, unaffiliated with any association or party.
The Statement of Purpose is not yet adopted โ it is proposed for adoption at Berwick Springs Lake Day later this year, where anyone who wishes to add their name will be able to do so.
Between now and then, we would like to hear from you. Two questions, if you have a moment:
Does this reflect you and what you stand for?
Is there anything here you could not put your name to?
โ
Our Statement of Purpose
We are the people of Berwick Springs โ neighbours, families, walkers, young and old, newcomers and those who have been here since the beginning.
We exist to build community.
At the heart of our Community is Berwick Springs Lake. It is the place we return to. It draws us out of our houses and into each other's company, on Sunday mornings and at every hour in between. What we have built here, we built around it. This is where we belong.
A community is not something we inherit. It is something we make โ week by week, in acts both ordinary and extraordinary.
We hold that everyone who lives beside Berwick Springs Lake belongs to it, and it belongs equally to all of them โ whatever they believe or do not believe, wherever they came from, however long they have been here.
For over twenty-five years this Community has looked after this place, the Lake and the parkland around it โ planting, cleaning, repairing, and speaking up for it when it needed a voice. We hold it in trust for those who come after us.
We belong to no party. We serve no one but our Community. We put our case on the record and let the facts carry it. We do not trade in outrage, and we do not manufacture enemies. We contest decisions and challenge arguments, not people. We work with our Council, and with anyone willing to work with us for the good of this place.
But there are things we will not accept:
โ Decisions made about this place without us
โ Consultation offered after the decision is taken
โ Silence given as an answer
The name of this place is core to who we are. We will keep asking for ours โ Berwick Springs Lake โ to be restored. Not because a name is all that we are, but because of everything this one means to us.
This is YOUR Community.
This is YOUR Lake.
