โ„๏ธ๐Ÿ† JULY PHOTO OF THE MONTH โ„๏ธ

Congratulations to J.D. on winning July's Photo of the Month with "Contemplation." A lone bench beneath the gums, the fountain glowing in the afterglow, and the Lake inviting a quiet moment's pause. A worthy winner.

A very warm welcome to R.B., a new photographer whose first entries this month brought a fresh eye to the competition. This is a timely reminder that you don't need a fancy camera to take part, just a love of the Lake and a moment worth sharing.

"Contemplation" becomes the second of three entries competing for the Winter Photo of the Season, alongside June's and August's winners. The voting for the August competition will follow next week.

๐ŸŽจ๐Ÿ† DRAWING & COLOURING โ€“ ROUND 2 WINNERS ๐Ÿ†๐ŸŽจ
Round 2 has closed, and we're delighted to celebrate two wonderful young artists who took us straight to the Lake's edge.

๐Ÿ† Leo (6) brought a magpie to life in the grass, coloured with real care, with the Lake as backdrop.

๐Ÿ† Allegra (8) gave us the Lake at sunset โ€“ a glowing sky, birds wheeling above, the parkland gathered around the water.

Two beautiful pieces, two different eyes on the same place we love, and this round, we're declaring them both our Round 2 winners. To Allegra and Leo, thank you for sharing your Lake with us.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Here's where you come in. Instead of voting this time, we'd love you to leave a message for Allegra and Leo in the comments on each photo, telling them what you enjoy about their artwork. If leaving a message below (instead of the photo), please address them by name so we know who to pass it to. We'll gather your kind words and present them to both artists with their certificates, as a keepsake to remember Round 2.

โœ๏ธ Round 3 (Augustโ€“September) is open and closes 30 September. This will be the third and final round before we celebrate our overall winners at Berwick Springs Lake Day on 8 November.
New artists are most welcome!

๐Ÿ“๐Ÿ’š BERWICK SPRINGS RESERVE ๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ“

Geographic Names Victoria (GNV) has gazetted the name Berwick Springs Reserve, covering twenty land parcels that make up the wetland and parkland south of Greaves Road.

We thank Casey Council for writing to GNV to seek formal recognition of the name. We also thank Cr Shane Taylor for supporting this Community aspiration.

This is not the giving of a name. The name already existed, informally, in everyday use, for years. What has changed is that it now has formal standing.

It is sometimes said that a name is just a name. It is not. A name is more than how a place is recorded; it is how the people who live beside it recognise themselves in it. That is true of the Reserve. It is just as true of the Lake.

Council's announcement is clear that this registration does not affect the State Government's renaming of the Lake. That decision was taken without this Community being asked, and it stands unchanged. We will keep asking for our name to be restored, and will go on calling it Berwick Springs Lake.

๐Ÿ’™ ABOUT THIS PAGE ๐Ÿ’™
A few comments have asked us about posts and signs that are not ours, so a short note to make things clear.

This is the Berwick Springs Community page. It is our only page. It is run by an independent group of local residents, and we are not affiliated with any other page, association or party.

Everything we publish appears here or at berwicksprings.com.au. If you come across a post, a sign, writing on the pavement, or a poster elsewhere, it did not come from us.

We exist to build community. What we do is the Sunday Walks, the Photo Competition, the Drawing & Colouring Competition, Berwick Springs Lake Day, Clean Up Australia Day, and, above all, care for this place we love. That is where our work is, and that is where it will stay.

The ribbons have been cut from the bridge.

We do not know who did it. We will not guess, and we will not name anyone.

What we do know is what was taken โ€“ expressions of love for the Lake ๐Ÿ’™, for the Community ๐Ÿค, for the trees and the wildlife ๐Ÿ’š. The Love Ribbons belong to the Community and are held in trust for everyone.

The freedom to say in public what you love about a place is one of the freedoms we take for granted here. It is worth defending.

Cutting them down does not unsay what they said. We will tie them again.

๐ŸŽ€๐Ÿ’™ THE LOVE RIBBONS ๐Ÿ’™๐ŸŽ€

The ribbons on the bridge began on 9 November 2025, at the first Berwick Springs Lake Day. Our event, our idea โ€“ and families did the rest, writing what they love about this place, then tying their ribbons to the rail. We have looked after them ever since.

Blue ๐Ÿ’™ for the water. White ๐Ÿค for love and community. Green ๐Ÿ’š for the trees and the wildlife.

The ribbons are not ours. They belong to the Community, and we hold the tradition in trust for everyone.

Which is why it matters how we treat each other around them. Respect and kindness are not reserved for the people who agree with us โ€“ they matter most with those who do not. A different view has never been a reason to treat anyone unkindly.

๐Ÿ“œ๐Ÿ’™ OUR STATEMENT OF PURPOSE ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ“œ
One of our Sunday walkers asked a simple question: do we have a statement of purpose?

We did not. So we wrote one.

It was written by a group of us who help organise and take part in the Sunday walks, the competitions and Berwick Springs Lake Day. We are an independent group of residents, unaffiliated with any association or party.

The Statement of Purpose is not yet adopted โ€“ it is proposed for adoption at Berwick Springs Lake Day later this year, where anyone who wishes to add their name will be able to do so.

Between now and then, we would like to hear from you. Two questions, if you have a moment:
Does this reflect you and what you stand for?
Is there anything here you could not put your name to?
โ€”
Our Statement of Purpose

We are the people of Berwick Springs โ€“ neighbours, families, walkers, young and old, newcomers and those who have been here since the beginning.

We exist to build community.

At the heart of our Community is Berwick Springs Lake. It is the place we return to. It draws us out of our houses and into each other's company, on Sunday mornings and at every hour in between. What we have built here, we built around it. This is where we belong.

A community is not something we inherit. It is something we make โ€“ week by week, in acts both ordinary and extraordinary.

We hold that everyone who lives beside Berwick Springs Lake belongs to it, and it belongs equally to all of them โ€“ whatever they believe or do not believe, wherever they came from, however long they have been here.

For over twenty-five years this Community has looked after this place, the Lake and the parkland around it โ€“ planting, cleaning, repairing, and speaking up for it when it needed a voice. We hold it in trust for those who come after us.

We belong to no party. We serve no one but our Community. We put our case on the record and let the facts carry it. We do not trade in outrage, and we do not manufacture enemies. We contest decisions and challenge arguments, not people. We work with our Council, and with anyone willing to work with us for the good of this place.

But there are things we will not accept:
โ€“ Decisions made about this place without us
โ€“ Consultation offered after the decision is taken
โ€“ Silence given as an answer

The name of this place is core to who we are. We will keep asking for ours โ€“ Berwick Springs Lake โ€“ to be restored. Not because a name is all that we are, but because of everything this one means to us.

This is YOUR Community.
This is YOUR Lake.
