Celebrating habitat restoration at Buckley's Hole Conservation Park.
Loss of habitat is a significant threat to our declining wildlife population. Every w**d and exotic plant replaces a native plant which our wildlife needs for food and shelter.
Buckley's Hole Conservation Park offers 88 hectares of opportunity for our wildlife to survive. Unfortunately, w**ds have taken over the Red Beach area so BIEPA volunteers, with the support of Moreton Bay CIty have been w**ding there for 6 months. If you would be interested in joining this group and doing your bit for Bribie's nature, please contact us at [email protected]

Pine plantation managers HQPlantations are also taking advantage of this week's suitable conditions to undertake a hazard reduction burns in their pine plantations, including at the northern end of Bribie Island.

🔥Reminder - prescribed burning, or hazard reduction burns, are happening now in our plantation forest areas 🔥

Our prescribe burns:
✅are undertaken during the cooler months and are crucial for reducing potential wildfire severity during high-risk periods such as spring and summer.

✅produce low intensity fires aimed to reduce forest fuel loads from accumulated dry leaves, grass and fallen branches.

✅are reported and approved by the Qld Fire Department prior to ignition.

✅are undertaken only in favourable weather conditions.

While every effort is made to minimise impacts, unfortunately, some level of smoke is unavoidable. We encourage community members to follow relevant health advice when burns are underway.

Queensland National Parks has asked BIEPA to help let the community know the planned burn scheduled for this week will be going ahead tomorrow, Wednesday 3rd June, starting around 9am. The block that is subject to the burn is on the eastern side of the plantations, nth of the Beacon Crossing around Mermaid (Third) Lagoon.

You may see smoke from planned burns next week, with the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) advising that forecast conditions are currently looking favourable for the next phase of its 2026 burn program.

Planned burns play an important role in reducing bushfire risk and maintaining healthy bushland, but they can also create temporary smoke impacts for nearby communities, especially those with health concerns.

We've pulled together the latest information, advice for residents, and a reminder of why fire remains an important part of Bribie's nature...

We're still reveling in an afternoon spent with BIEPA - Bribie Island Environmental Protection Association Inc. (BIEPA) earlier in the year, where we got a first-hand glimpse at how our community grants have enabled this volunteer-led group to keep turtles and hatchlings safe. 🐢

Our next round of community grants applications has now closed, and we can't wait to see what community initiatives we can support next... but until then - look at these gorgeous creatures! 😍
