Hospice Annual General Meeting: we've been asked if non-members can attend. We are a registered charity, not a club, so yes, members of the public are encouraged to attend. Our mission has always been to benefit THIS community. Our community supports our work with fundraising, donations and by volunteering. But hay, we need you to RSVP for catering purposes. We've noticed that people stay around to chat and ask questions if there's something to munch on. SMS: 0408 358 459

Come along and help us choose a sustainable path forward and how we will travel along that path. Please RSVP via SMS to the Secretary: 0408 358 459

Today, in pouring rain, we took another step towards demolition of Ellen's house, removal of the rooftop solar panels. Next week the demolition activity will ramp up and extend over three weeks, more if necessary. Demolition of a house built of asbestos panels is a job to take on carefully.

It took a very long time to get to this stage, the beginning. Dismantling of Lionel and Ellen's shed, which had been there for over 40 years, was accomplished over this weekend.

This week is National Palliative Care Week (10 – 16 May)

This year’s theme: "Getting to the heart of it. Big Questions. Real Answers.", encourages open and honest conversations about palliative and end‑of‑life care. Conversations that can ease fear, reduce uncertainty, and help people live as fully as possible.

At Karuna, we support patients, families and carers across the community through specialist palliative care, carer wellbeing support, spiritual care, service navigation, counselling, and education. Every day, our team cares for those experiencing life’s most challenging moments.

💬 As part of Palliative Care Week, we’re hosting a free online session:
What People Wish They Had Known Earlier
🗓 Thursday 14 May | ⏰ 12.30–1.30pm (AEST)

This gentle and practical conversation explores the questions people often wish they’d asked sooner — about palliative care, support options, and caring for yourself and others.

Karuna Hospice Service has been nominated for the Pumicestone Business Excellence Awards 2026. We would be chuffed if our followers would support this nomination before closing on April 21. It may seem odd that a specialist Service Provider is considered for a business award, but we can assure you Karuna has a strategic plan, a business plan that supports community needs based on kindness and respect, and responsible financial management like any successful business. When Federal Aged Care legislation made it impossible for us to continue to support our beautiful Hospice Suite we turned to an old friend, Karuna. Karuna did not just meet our expectations and hopes but filled them to overflowing. Karuna's office is at 27 Cartwright Street Windsor 4030, but their highly skilled staff are out in the community every day including in the Pumicestone electorate. Not a week goes by without someone telling us a story about a family who had the support of Karuna during their time of need. If you would like to support this nomination for well-earned recognition, please go to Karuna's Facebook or Instagram sites, scroll to the "tiles" for this award and nominate them for Business of the Year and the Health and Wellbeing categories. We had an opportunity to speak to the members of PVA last week about our work and that of our partners in this community. PVA, Partners of Veterans Association, is an active group promoting the welfare and social health of its members. Thank you for this opportunity to visit the group and for the very generous donation to our work.

Another pre-demolition job ticked off. If you want work done correctly then engage qualified and efficient contractors. Redsell were very generous on this job. I won't miss having to cut back the bougainvillea either. 😁

Apologies for creating some confusion here. Ellen celebrated her 101/1st birthday with her friends in 2023 and she passed away three months later. There was a lot more attention the year before when she had her 100th birthday pictured here. Ellen remained independent in her home till a few months before she passed when Covid-19 took a toll on her health. Ellen had a quirky sense of humour. One of the few times we saw her angry was when we talked about our working days. Ellen was a supervisor in a clothing factory in Brisbane which no doubt created her hearing loss. The business attracted contracts for military uniforms during WW2 and increased their staff numbers. When peace was declared the contracts dried up and the business put off many workers, most of them women. Ellen's anger was due to the timing. If the business had kept those workers on for a few more weeks their "redundancy" payout would have been significantly more. They would certainly not been on high pay rates but those were hard times that put our current woes in the shade. Ellen had a clear memory of this dismissal. Her sense of fairness never faded.

Mixed feelings. When Ellen had her 101st birthday she announced that 100 was enough and she'd decided to start again. Ellen declared this was her 1st birthday. She knitted the sweater she's wearing in the photo and a gazillion other knitted garments over the years. Ellen was so clever at knitting and sewing as were many women of her generation. We are soon to demolish the house that Ellen and Lionel built and spent many happy retirement years living in and build a modern place that will serve the needs of this community. That was one of her final wishes, but it's still a tough one to wrap our heads and hearts around.
