Would you accept your inheritance early if it meant living with your mum, alongside your husband and three children?

For Cat Williams, the decision made sense for myriad reasons.

Her heart had long been set on inheriting the 19th-century Adelaide house that's been in her family since the 1980s.

Cat assumed this would happen after her parents died and that she would buy her sisters out, but began considering multigenerational living after her father moved into a nursing home in 2019 following a dementia diagnosis.

"We didn't really love the idea of Mum being alone in this very large family home or having to go into a nursing home in future," she explains.

"So we thought: 'Why don't we move into the house now … and start the children off at the local primary school on this side of town?'

"It's such a good way to consolidate a family asset in a way everyone can enjoy it at once, but it also means it's one less house the family needs."

Dementia Advocate Vivienne, whose husband David lives with dementia, has always loved libraries.

And her love for libraries has only grown since she used the Dementia Australia Library following her husband’s diagnosis.

“The Dementia Australia Library was such a valuable resource for me while caring for my husband,” Vivienne said.

“I strongly recommend that people think of libraries when they are looking for information, support and community.”

Tomorrow, 14 February is Library Lover’s Day, which celebrates the valuable role libraries play in our communities.

The Dementia Australia Library is the largest publicly accessible dementia library in the world and is free to join.

Access ebooks, audiobooks, topic guides or browse the extensive collection by signing up for the Dementia Australia Library here: https://alzheimers.softlinkhosting.com.au/liberty/libraryHome.do?corporation=AlzheimersAustralia&invokeRegister=True&_open=1

Sally was just 21 when her mother Kim began showing some unusual signs. As the youngest of three, and the only one living at home, she was the one who first noticed the changes.

“I said to my sisters that Mum was doing things that were out of character,” Sally said.

“I’d go to the cutlery drawer and pull out something that didn’t belong. She was also struggling to read and write and had difficulty with her visual perception.”

After countless doctors appointments and scans, Kim was diagnosed with posterior cortical atrophy (PCA) at the age of 55.

PCA is a rare form of dementia that involves the loss and dysfunction of brain cells, particularly at the posterior (back) of the brain.

If you would like to find out more about PCA or if you have noticed changes in yourself or a loved one, we are here to help. You don’t need a diagnosis to contact us.
