A story from our partners Sumatran Sun Bear Team 🐻❤️

Rossa is a 17 year old female Sun Bear. She was our little surprise to welcome in 2022. As a 13 year old, she, in comparison, was a calm and peaceful girl. Rossa arrived to our centre with Uca after being confiscated by Authorities in Medan. Her history isn’t clear, just that she had been a pet since a young cub and caged for 13 years. Rossa would have been taken from her mum as a young cub in the forest. It’s awful to think of what she may have witnessed.

Philip Stubley and Lesley Small were able to introduce her to the energetic bears, Uca and Jessy not long after the arrival. They were all excited during their first introductions in the den area. We introduced 2 bears at a time to each other. Both of the young girls were boisterous but Rossa remained clam and both Uca and Jessy respected her presence. It wasn’t long before we could have all 3 of the bears together and even though her energy levels were lower, she could still “control the room”.

It was very humbling for Philip and Lesley to be a part of this and we agreed that Rossa appeared to be a motherly figure to the young ones who too were taken from their forest mums from a very young age. She is well loved by everyone who meets her. Rossa is calm and wise, she has a presence that meets your soul.

We thank Allowed 2 Grow Old for the support given to us to allow us to care for our bears now and to be able to plan for future rescues.

Today is the International Respect for Chickens Day 🐤🐔

International Respect for Chickens Day is an annual project launched by United Poultry Concerbs in 2005 to celebrate chickens throughout the world & protest the bleakness of their lives in farming operations.

In light of today, I want to focus on the 6 hens that came to us late in December.

They were in a terrible condition. Scaly mites covered their bodies, they had missing feathers all over & bald in some patches. One hen did not make it & she passed soon after arriving with us.

Odette, Scarlett, Victoria, Isabella & Camilla have continued to bloom & are truely apart of the flock. Odette struggles with walking, something we will continuously help her with.

We are so amazed at their strength & bravery. They overcame such cruelty & now get to experience how life should be.
