We STAND with NEPAL

Our Rotary Club is making a donation to support the affected families in Nepal, through a designated Rotary Club Project based very close to the devastation in Nepal.
Severe flooding, and landslides in Rasuwa District, Nepal, have caused significant damage to homes, infrastructures, livelihoods, and essential community facilities.
Funds raised through the "Rotary Australia World Community Service" (RAWCS) crowdfunding project will provide practical community base assistance to affected and vulnerable families, helping them restore, basic living conditions, repair or replace essential items and infrastructure and rebuild livelihoods.

The Rotary club of Damauli was the very first club that Rotary Sunrise 🌅 was involved with in 1999 and 2000 and is part of this district.

The recovery effort is supported by the Rotary club of Rudramati in Nepal🇳🇵

Funds raised through the RAWCS crowdfunding project will provide practical community base assistance to affected and vulnerable families, helping them restore, basically living conditions, repair or replace essential items and infrastructure and rebuild livelihoods 🫶🏼

Working through trusted local, Rotary and community partners will ensure that assistance is targeted to those in need and contributes to a sustainable recovery for flood affected communities.

The National Science and Engineering Challenge, NSW 2026

The NSW State Final was held over 3 days last week with competition between 24 of the highest scoring schools in NSW!

SEC is a nationwide STEM outreach program presented by the University of Newcastle in partnership with communities, Rotary clubs, universities and sponsors.
The SEC is conducted in every state and territory with over 50% of participants living in rural or remote locations.
The competition is divided into three levels: regional, state and national.
Typically, eight schools per day compete in a Challenge with each school providing a team of 32 students, primarily from Year 9 and 10.
These teams are divided into eight groups that compete in one or two activities during the day.

Reasoning: How can we equip students to design solutions for a more sustainable world?
At the Challenge, every STEM activity is designed with sustainability at its core.
From using recyclable materials to create wind turbines for renewable energy, to exploring First Nations sustainability practices through Fish Traps.
We’re here to help students think like scientists and engineers, whilst learning how to care for the planet they are shaping.

Congratulations to all of the schools who competed in the NSW State final. The overall state winner is Ravenswood School for Girls. They defeated James Ruse Agricultural High School by 2 points.

University of Newcastle Staff: 8 volunteers completed 18 shifts totalling 134 hours
Sponsors: 9 volunteers completed 12 shifts totalling 98 hours
Friends of SEC: 2 people completed 6 shifts totalling 48 hours
Rotarians: 63 volunteers completed 97.5 shifts totalling 770 hours. 13 Rotary Volunteers were from our Rotary Club Toronto Sunrise.

The National Final will be held in Sydney on Wednesday October 28, 2026 from 8.30am - 2.30pm at the Great Hall of Australian Parliament House in Canberra. The participants are the top scoring schools from each state and territory plus a local wildcard team.

Helping out local families

For a number of years our club has sponsored a food hamper project with weekly delivery of 10 food hampers to Toronto Primary school.
Across each fortnight 20 school families who are doing it tough are given a food hamper to help them get through until the next fortnight.
Our club is responsible for purchasing the hampers and dropping off to TSPS for distribution. The hampers contain basics like bread, cereals and milk.
Thanks for your weekly commitment to this much needed service, Ray Smith.
Additionally other members of our club volunteer during morning classes to assist in classrooms.

The Rotary District 9660 Public Speaking Competition 2026:

The program runs in three progressive stages, culminating in a district final in November.

Competition Structure & Dates:

Round 1 (Club Level): Completed by 31 August 2026.
Individual clubs host local school competitions to select a winner.
Round 2 (Community/Cluster Level): Completed by 24 October 2026. Geographically grouped clusters of clubs hold regional run-offs to select one finalist per area.
Round 3 (District Final): Held at the District Showcase in Tamworth on 21–22 November 2026.

Speech Guidelines Prepared Speech:
Maximum of 5 minutes on a chosen topic incorporating aspects of the Rotary Four-Way Test.
Impromptu Speech: 1 to 2 minutes on a topic assigned 2 minutes before speaking.

Our Club hosted Round 1 last Wednesday evening

We had 3 students compete all from Year 10 -
Alisha from St Pauls Catholic College Boolaroo,
Ella and Joshua from Toronto High School.

The 2 students to go through to the area final are Alisha and Ella. Their presentation of the prepared speeches were judged as very close with one being “The use of earbuds by younger people as a way of relaxing and assisting in forgetting the pressures of the day.” Joshua discussed “Spider man and a different way of looking at this comic hero”. The third, Aleisia, spoke about the results and implications of her survey on “Gender Based Course Selection at her School”.

The Impromptu topic was:
“How is social media shaping the way teenagers see themselves today?”

So our congratulations go to Alisha and Ella as they prepare for Round 2.
