World Environment Day 5 June 2026

As part of our club’s 30th anniversary celebrations and for World Environment Day on June 5, 2026, we will be embarking on a native tree-planting project in the local community, reinforcing our commitment to environmental conservation.

Collaborating with LMCC, we are set to make a tangible impact in the area, selecting the ideal location and plant species to thrive.

What an exciting week for NourishEd, a charity dedicated to providing food and education support to the Lake Macquarie community. Their focus is on empowering individuals and families through access to nourishing food and educational resources.

We started with Founder of NourishEd, Nic Cade coming to our club meeting as our guest speaker.

Last month, Our club sponsored Nic Cade to RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards) an intensive, week-long residential Rotary leadership and personal development program in Australia for young people aged 14 to 30yo. The program empowers emerging leaders to build confidence, communication skills, and professional networks through workshops, seminars, and team-building activities.

Nic reported back that the RYLA is the best youth leadership program he has ever experienced with exceptional personal development opportunities - learning to lead, self control as a leader, public speaking, negotiation, conflict resolution, finance and managing teams. Participants were pushed beyond their comfort zones - physically as well as mentally, learning life skills and making lifetime friendships. There were 24 participants for the week long program. Nic met inspiring young people from Rotary clubs across the District and 100% of participants want to return next year to mentor the next participants.

As a Founder of local charity NourishEd, Nic brought us up to date with their move to new premises this week. Despite being in operation for only 2 years the number of families they support has increased dramatically. The larger venue will mean an expansion to the number of services offered: hairdressing, orange sky laundry service, support groups, rooms for individual counselling and a free cafe with seating that provides a safe space to meet for a chat.

See Photos below showing the soft opening at the new venue that club members were invited to attend.

NourishEd is the beneficiary of our annual “Pig Day Out” Fundraiser at the Toronto Pub on Sunday 4 October from 11am with last race being run at 3pm. This is the 4th year we have run the Pig Day Out which has become a very successful family friendly activity and fundraiser.

Attached is a really informative article from "The Conversation" - Honey from Australian wildflowers has potent power to kill bacteria"

HONEY SELLING FUNDRAISER:
As a club we love our honey and have a member who is a bee keeper. He has kindly offered to give our club part profits from the sale of jars of his honey. Great Breakfast meeting with a hearty cooked breakfast.

It was great to wish Barry Doherty a very happy retirement from his well known business that he has run for many years in the local region.

We welcomed Bruce Robinson and his wife Shane Robinson following their move from Sydney to Coal Point. Bruce was inducted into our club and we look forward to his participation in our projects and getting to know Bruce and Shane as they settle into life here alongside beautiful Lake Macquarie.

Bruce is currently Treasurer of the Rotary Project ROMAC Australia & New Zealand - Rotary Oceania Medical Aid for Children.

Rotary Oceania Medical Aid for Children (ROMAC) is a prominent humanitarian charity run by Australian and New Zealand Rotary Clubs. It provides life-saving or dignity-restoring surgery to children from developing countries in the Oceania region. Treatment is arranged and funded within Australian and New Zealand hospitals because the necessary medical procedures are unavailable in the children's home countries. Rotarians raise funds and volunteer their time to act as hosts and support networks for the children and their families during treatment.

We look forward to continuing our support for ROMAC Australia & New Zealand

It was great to host a special visitor this week who has relocated to Fishing Point from Sydney with their family, bringing fresh perspectives to our community.

We were thrilled to receive Certificates of Appreciation, alongside club member Dollina Renton, from the organising committee of the “Heaven Can Wait” Charity Sailing Regatta as primary sponsor of the annual regatta.

Heaven Can Wait Charity Sailing Regatta is in it’s 20th year and, since inception, has raised almost $700,000 for the Home Help Program of the Hunter Branch of Cancer Council, funding domestic assistance for many people throughout the greater Newcastle and Hunter Regions.

Successful Trivia night last Friday night raising funds for NourishEd in Toronto.

NourishEd are doing a great job providing free and low cost hampers and pantry items as well as home cooked meals to an increasing numbers of families who are doing it tough in Toronto area.

Another great Rotary Project our club supports:

Operation Toilets Australia - now renamed We Can't Wait!

The mission of Operation Toilets Australia and We Can’t Wait! is to provide clean, safe and sustainable sanitation in schools and surrounding communities in the developing world.

Sanitation and clean water go hand in hand!

April was "This Earth Month" - protecting our planet by ensuring proper waste management and water conservation through clean toilet systems. Earth Month is a dedicated time to raise awareness about environmental issues, promote sustainability, and celebrate the planet.

Rotary Club of Toronto Sunrise chose to celebrate This Earth Month by making a $3,000 donation to support the current and future E-Wash and Toilet projects of "We Can't Wait!" in India, Ethiopia and Nepal. Follow this link for more information:

Attached photos show the amazing toilets and clean water programs that have been achieved by We Can't Wait! in recent months.
